Almost 15 years after its last season aired, The Proud Family is making a comeback. Disney has officially given the greenlight for the revival of the animated series for Disney+.
The reboot now titled The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder will feature new episodes with most of the original cast returning. The original voice actors for the Proud family are all returning. Kyla Pratt will be back as Penny Proud, Tommy Davidson as Oscar Proud, Paula Jai Parker as Trudy Proud, and Jo Marie Payton as Suga Mama. Cedric the Entertainer is also returning as Uncle Bobby Proud. Other returning cast members are Karen Malina White as Dijonay Jones, Soleil Moon Frye as Zoey Howzer, and Alisa Reyes as LaCienega Boulevardez.
No airdate has been announced yet.
The original series aired in the early 2000s. It was one of the few animated series that featured an African American family at that time. And it was praised for its messages of inclusion and cultural diversity. It won a BET Comedy
Award, an NAACP Image Award for Cedric the Entertainer, and two Casting Society of America Awards.
“The genius of the original Proud Family series was that, under the guise of a family comedy, it provided a brilliant social commentary on our life and times,” Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide said in a statement. “With this new series, Bruce and Ralph will once again challenge everyone to think differently about the world we share.”
Aside from the original cast, orignal series creator/ executive producer Bruce W. Smith and executive producer Ralph Farquhar are back. They are reuniting with co-executive producer and story editor Calvin Brown Jr. to lead the revival.
“In our minds, the show never really went away, as we still had tons of stories left to tell,” Smith and Farquhar said in a joint statement. “It’s the perfect time to bring back this show, and we can’t wait to take fans, old and new alike, on this journey with us.”
“The show’s humor and relatable stories are as relevant with audiences today as ever,” said Agnes Chu, senior vice president of content at Disney Plus. “Our audiences have loved rediscovering their favorite episodes of The Proud Family, and we’re excited Bruce, Ralph, Calvin, and the returning cast are creating new stories for their new home on Disney Plus.”
Other shows recently ordered at Disney+ include Mighty Ducks starring Lauren Graham with Emilio Estevez and Turner and Hooch starring Josh Peck.
