It looks like “Preacher” is taking its roots to the small screen once its second season arrives. “Preacher” season 2 will begin to feel more like its comic book source, says Producer Sam Catlin. This comes a fresh and satisfying news to hardcore “Preacher” comic book fans. Season 1 did something a little bit different from its source material.
But in any case, season 1 stood as a prequel to the comics; albeit introducing the powerful trio of Jesse (Dominic Cooper), Tulip (Ruth Negga), and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), keeping them within Annville for the entirety of the first season. It then ended with the trio finally on the road (which is the beginning of the comics).
Preacher Season 2: A More Faithful Adaptation
Based on what we know about season 2 of “Preacher” so far, it draws heavy references to the early issues of the original comics—with some minor changes. The recent trailer released (which you can watch below) focuses on the Saint of Killers, one of the characters introduced in season 1. A featurette for “Preacher” season 2 also teases more on comedy, absurdity and of course, violence.
In an interview with MovieFone, the show’s producer, Sam Catlin revealed how the show will change and how character development will be drawn more from the original comic book material. Here’s what the producer has to say:
“So what we want to do is we always want to make “Preacher” feel like “Preacher,” and we delve a little deeper into some of these, what look like little pit stops on the road in the comic book become whole episodes, or several episodes, or stuff like that. For this season, I won’t say, but we were going to have like this season be two halves, and we were going to end up with one arc, and then move on to a whole other world for the second half. Then we kept pushing it off. It’s like, “Well, maybe we can get to that world for the last four episodes.” Then maybe just the last two.”
We always want to make Preacher feel like “Preacher.”
There are plenty of short stories within the “Preacher” comic books, as the trio encounters different characters in the comics itself. Catlin also adds that they didn’t want to shortchange the TV iteration of “Preacher,” and he says that there are whole worlds within the comics that the show can really delve into.
It certainly looks like the second season is on all systems go. And now that the viewers are familiar with the characters, it gives the show plenty of room to explore the different elements found in the comics. For sure, the show is bound to be another awesome ride.
“Preacher” season 2 premieres this Sunday, June 25th, 10 PM on AMC. Watch the trailer below:
