Jared Leto’s Morbius may have only swept the internet, but the online Jesus figure has already signed on for another big blockbuster franchise. Leto had been attached to Tron: Ares for a while, but the project has managed to make a big step forward by landing its director.
Deadline reports that Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) is in negotiations to direct the Tron sequel with the production aiming for a start in August. We don’t have any details about the story, but the sequel to Tron: Legacy was said to have the world of The Grid bleeding over to the ‘real world’ with Cillian Murphy’s character set to play the main villain.
Though the story of Legacy wasn’t perfect, I thought that the world was still pretty solid, and a lot of fans had been clamoring for a sequel for years, with Disney not being able to deliver. We don’t know what’s so special about Ares that Disney would be willing to push forward with Leto, but I’m open for a story that would pick up where Legacy left off.
I’m just hoping that they don’t do a prequel to the first movie, because I’m honestly so tired of established franchises moving backward with Star Wars and Harry Potter. I’d love to see what kind of story they can tell especially with the modern age of smartphones; it doesn’t have to be Black Mirror, but I wouldn’t mind a kid-friendly version of that show.
No release date has been set for Tron: Ares.
