Amazon may be dominating in Lord of the Rings media landscape right now with their huge Rings of Power show, but things could be changing soon with WB landing a deal to make more LOTR films.
Though director Peter Jackson didn’t really have anything to do with Rings of Power, he says that he and his writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have been kept in the loop for WB’s new LOTR deal. The trio tells Deadline:
“Warner Brothers and Embracer have kept us in the loop every step of the way… We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”
Though Rings of Power did try its best to keep to the tone of Jackson’s LOTR films, Jackson had said that they had ‘forgotten to get back to him’ when they initially asked him if he wanted to get involved. With WB definitely wanting to bank on the success of the original film franchise, it would make sense for them to make sure they have Jackson’s method down pat.
If anything, there are still some fans who think that Jackson’s adaptations of the books weren’t for them. Though a lot of the major beats were followed, there was still a lot added to make sure that the movies were still entertaining as movies; like the humor and extended action scenes.
I honestly don’t know what LOTR property they could make that would be interesting enough for general audiences who aren’t Tolkien nerds, but I’d be happy to see the studio try.
No release date has been set for WB’s new LOTR projects, but you can check out the first season of The Rings of Power now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
