After the failed assassination of Oswald Mosley, Arthur and Tommy went back home defeated. They didn’t know who betrayed them. Tommy knew that Oswald didn’t know anything about his plans. Tommy couldn’t accept defeat and tried to kill himself. He took out his gun and put it to his temple. Tommy pulled the trigger, hoping he would die, but he didn’t. Lizzie went out to the field to fetch Tommy. She heard the trigger click, but the gun didn’t go off. Arthur took all of Tommy’s bullets out before they arrived. Lizzie felt disgusted with Tommy for trying to kill himself. She gave the bullets back to Tommy if he still wanted to kill himself. Tommy picks up the bullets and walks back home.
Tommy enters his office to answer the phone. Captain Swing from the IRA informs Tommy they were behind his failed assassination attempt. She told Tommy that they needed to keep Mosley alive. Swing also tells Tommy that they restructured his organization and returned his dead comrades. A truck arrives at Tommy’s estate to deliver his dead comrades. There were three bodies wrapped in white cloth. Tommy went outside to remove the cloth and reveal who his dead comrades were. He removes the first cloth and sees Barney. Next was Aberama. Tommy considered both men his most trusted allies and friends. He mourned the loss of his comrades, but nothing gave him greater pain than revealing who the third body was.
It was Polly. Captain swing tells Tommy that he used to have a crutch to lean on in his time of failure, but this time, he needs to lean on the IRA because they removed his crutch. They were referring to Polly, who supported Tommy through the thick and thin. Michael lits up Polly’s wagon as they bid her goodbye. Everyone attended the funeral as Michael swears that he will have his revenge on Tommy.
Four years later, Tommy is in Miquelon Island for business. Michael is on his way to the island as well. Tommy informs a guard about his business. He tells the guard that someone may die; if it is him, they need to contact his brother. Tommy enters Hotel Robert and asks for a glass of water. The bartender tells Tommy that people were drunk and angry because the prohibition ended at Miquelon Island. The bartender suggests that Tommy leaves the bar with his glass of water. A man named Jean-Claude approaches the bar and asks for another whisky bottle. They were angry because most of them lost their jobs because of Tommy. Jean-Claude blames Tommy for everyone losing their jobs. He thinks Tommy ordered water as some joke. Tommy responds that he ordered water because he no longer drinks alcohol.
The bartender tells Jean-Claude to leave Tommy alone, but he wouldn’t stop talking to him. He threw Tommy’s water away and poured him a glass of whiskey. Jean-Claude wants Tommy to toast and drink for the people of Miquelon who lost their jobs and their future because of his company. He threatens Tommy that he can’t leave the bar unless he raises a toast for the people of Miquelon. Tommy calmly tells Jean-Claude that he won’t drink the whiskey. Jean-Claude thinks he could bully Tommy since they outnumbered him, but he’s just keeping his anger at bay. Tommy slashes Jean-Claude’s face with his pocket knife. Tommy continues to explain what he’s doing on Miquelon, but Jean-Claude doesn’t want to hear him speak. He tries to attack Tommy with a knife, but Tommy has already brought his pistol out and fired two warning shots.
The bartender’s wife came into the room because she heard gunshots. Tommy placed his gun on the counter and told everyone that his guests would be arriving shortly. Tommy went with the bartender’s wife to prepare the meeting room. Meanwhile, Michael asks around where Hotel Robert is, and it seems he’s meeting with Tommy. Michael and his men arrive shortly after Tommy arrives at the meeting room. Michael didn’t think he would do business with Tommy again because he didn’t want to take his revenge on the IRA. Tommy tells Michael he’s up against a very powerful enemy, and taking his revenge for Polly’s death takes time. He points out that he’s choosing his moment very carefully but assures Michael that the moment will come.
Ada and Lizzie were at home with all the kids. They were going to spend Christmas early because Lizzie and the kids needed to go to Canada to meet with Tommy. They were waiting for Santa to arrive, but he won’t be coming after all. Arthur was supposed to dress as Santa to surprise the kids with their presents. He’s too drunk even to put on the Santa costume. Arthur nearly passes out on the staircase on his way up to meet with everyone.
Meanwhile, Tommy continues his meeting with Michael and his associates. With the prohibition ending that night, Tommy proposes to run opium from Miquelon Island into America and Canada. He wants to give the people of Miquelon their lives back in the form of new cargo. Michael’s associates couldn’t agree until having told “Uncle Jack” about Tommy’s proposal.
Tommy knew Uncle Jack was none other than Jack Nelson. He told Michael they could talk again after bringing things up with Jack. Michael’s associates didn’t allow Tommy to leave just yet. They wanted him to tell them a poem because he said to them that alcohol is just fuel for loud engines inside their heads. Tommy indulges everyone with a poem and ends their meeting. Before leaving, Tommy tells everyone about an informant within their Southern Boston office. Tommy told one of Michael’s associates about a man with a bleeding heart tattoo with the name “Maria” on it. Tommy left the meeting room and gave his business card to the man he had fought with earlier. He told the man not to burn his card because every catastrophe is an opportunity.
Ada sees Arthur nearly passed out on the table. She tries to wake Arthur up, but he is too wasted. It was Christmas; Ada asked their butler to find the presents that Arthur was supposed to give the children. Tommy calls the police to tell them about Michael and his briefcase. He told the police that the suitcase contained opium. Tommy leaves Miquelon Island because he has more business to attend to. Karl and Ada were inside Tommy’s office when the phone rang. Karl wants to answer the phone, but Ada forbids him. Ada doesn’t want to answer the call, but Karl tells her that it might be important. She answers the calls and regrets her decision while she talks with someone on the other end.
Ada goes to Chinatown to fetch Arthur. She uses her lipstick to write Arthur’s name on his chest. Ada tells the owner of the establishment to refuse Arthur as their customer. She tells them that Arthur is Tommy’s brother, and they need him to stop taking opium. Gina visits Michael in prison. Uncle Jack is already looking for the informant while Michael spends time in jail. Gina doesn’t think they should do business with Tommy, but Michael tells her that Tommy gave them a tip about an informant in their ranks. Gina wants the truth from Michael as she doesn’t understand why Michael needs to continue his business with Tommy. Michael responds that he has unfinished business with Tommy. He now has the opportunity to get his revenge on Tommy, and he won’t allow things to slip away.
[00:43:30] Tommy visits Gina to tell her a message for Uncle Jack. Gina tells Tommy that Uncle Jack refuses to accept his offer. Uncle Jack is going to high places and doesn’t want to deal with opium. Whiskey is now legal, and Uncle Jack is buying all the distilleries he can find. Tommy told Gina that he tipped the police about Michael’s opium. He did that to create a dilemma for Jack. Uncle Jack can’t release Michael from prison because he’s making friends in high places, but if Jack doesn’t release Michael, it will give a bad taste to all of his men in Boston. Tommy gave his ultimatum to Gina. If Jack doesn’t buy his opium, he will sell it to the Solomons in East Boston.
[00:48:00] If the Solomons accept his deal, the power in Boston will shift in their favor and start a war against Uncle Jack and his cronies. Tommy left his message with Gina, who couldn’t do anything against Tommy’s decision. After his conversation with Tommy, Lizzie calls him. She told Tommy that they wouldn’t be able to meet up with him in Boston because of Ruby. Lizzie tells Tommy that Ruby is sick. They can’t board a ship due to doctors’ orders. Lizzie told Tommy that Ruby became delirious because of a high fever. They were talking about Ruby when Lizzie told Tommy what Ruby was up to. Johnny Doggs’ kids were teaching Ruby some gypsy words, and she kept uttering them in her sleep. She tells Tommy, “Tickner Maura, Tickner Maura, o beng, o beng.” Tommy loses his shit after hearing those words.
Tommy asks Lizzie if Ruby mentioned anyone while she was delirious. Lizzie responds that Ruby saw a man with green eyes. At that moment, Tommy declares that he will come home immediately. He tells Lizzie to tell Johnny Doggs and his wives Ruby’s exact words. He explains that it has something to do with Gypsy shit. Tommy told Lizzie that she should listen to Esmeralda as she listened to a doctor. Tommy told Lizzie what she needed to do to protect Ruby. Lizzie didn’t argue and just agreed with anything that Tommy told her. Before going back to England, Tommy visits Michael. He tells Michael that he will stay in prison for a while longer because Uncle Jack won’t be able to bail him out. Tommy tells Michael he will meet with Uncle Jack in London because he’s visiting the country to buy distillery licenses.
Tommy plans to continue his business with Michael after he gets out of prison. Michael asks Tommy why he didn’t learn of his limitations when Polly died, and Tommy responds that he doesn’t have any limitations. In the meantime, Tommy plans to show Gina a good time as she accompanies Uncle Jack to England.
