Paramount+ Developing a Galaxy Quest Series

Paramount+ may have spun off Star Trek to no end, but they’re just now bringing back an IP that isn’t really Trek, but is considered one of the best Trek movies ever made. I’m talking about 1999’s meta comedy Galaxy Quest.
THR reports that Paramount+ has ordered a series based on Galaxy Quest, and it will have producer Mark Johnson, who was attached to the original movie, returning for the show.
We don’t have any details or specifics for the series, but I would definitely love an update on the portrayal of modern sci-fi actors and fandom, especially now that the media landscape is a completely different animal.
Just in case you haven’t seen Galaxy Quest, the film follows a cast of characters who were all actors on a hit sci-fi series called “Galaxy Quest”. The actors had all been down on their luck after the show had ended, but they suddenly find themselves living an actual sci-fi adventure when a group of aliens calls for their help in fighting a real alien threat—thinking that they’re the heroes they played in their series.
Here’s the trailer featuring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, and Sam Rockwell:
There have apparently been multiple attempts to bring back Galaxy Quest with the original crew, but the passing of Alan Rickman had put a wrench in their plans. Either way, I think a series could completely work with a new cast and some original actors returning; I wouldn’t even be surprised if they made fun of more than just Trek, but Star Wars as well.
No release date has been set for Galaxy Quest on Paramount+.
