Our Flag Means Death: HBO Max Drops First Trailer for Taika Waititi’s Pirate Comedy

Taika Waititi is once again teaming up with Flight of the Conchords alum Rhys Darby for this comedy about a band of wannabe pirates. Check out HBO Max’s first trailer for Our Flag Means Death.

The logline reads, “Our Flag Means Death is loosely based on the true adventures of Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), a pampered aristocrat who abandons his life of privilege to become a pirate.”

In true Taika Waititi fashion, he’s also given himself a role in the series, and he’s going to be playing the famous pirate Blackbeard. According to EW, the series is actually based on a true story, and Stede and Blackbeard were said to have teamed up with each other when it came to their pirate antics.

Though Darby has been known for a lot of comedic supporting roles, this will be his first time as a lead of a series. When it came to his character of Stede, showrunner David Jenkins said, “This guy had one of the world’s great, colorful midlife crises… That’s a great way into a show in any genre, but to mix that with pirates, I was like, ‘Oh, this is fantastic.’

Besides Waititi and Darby, the series also has other comedy names like Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen, and Leslie Jones. The show also has appearances from Ewen Bremmer (Wonder Woman), Joel Fry (Cruella), and even Kristian Naird (Hodor from Game of Thrones).

Catch Our Flag Means Death premieres on HBO Max this March.
