Oscars 2017: Landmark Firsts, List Of Winners

Last night’s Oscars was one for the history books, with spectacular performances, beautiful speeches and, like any good film, a plot twist that had us all wondering: “What just happened?” Yes, we’re talking about that moment Moonlight won Best Picture after La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner. But the indie film’s unbelievable (and well-deserved) victory wasn’t the only highlight of the night.

Jimmy Kimmel had his first turn hosting the Oscars, giving playful jabs at friendly rival Matt Damon. The ceremony featured stellar performances from John Legend, Sting, Auli’i Cravalho, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Justin Timberlake. As for the winners of the night – well, Moonlight wasn’t the only film to achieve a first.

Landmark Firsts At Oscars 2017

The 89th Academy Awards boasted a fair share of landmark firsts. The big winners of the night were, without a doubt, La La Land and Moonlight. Damien Chazelle’s blockbuster brought home 6 awards out of the 14 categories it was nominated in. Chazelle himself won Best Director, earning recognition as the youngest ever to win the award at only 32 years old. Emma Stone won her first Oscar (Best Actress in a Leading Role) for her beautiful performance as La La Land’s Mia. The film also won awards for Original Score, Original Song, Production Design, and Cinematography.

Moonlight won three awards, including the coveted Best Picture. The victory marked a milestone in Black and LGBT history as a triumph of diversity. Mahershala Ali, who played Juan in the film, won for Best Supporting Role. He is the first Muslim to ever win an Oscar for an acting role. Moonlight also won a third award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Other firsts of the night – after nine films, the Harry Potter franchise finally won their first Oscar. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them won Best Costume Design, delighting Potterheads everywhere. Viola Davis also won her first Oscar (Best Actress in a Supporting Role) for her performance in Fences. Davis has been nominated three other times over the years. But she doesn’t have the longest Oscar-losing streak. That questionable distinction goes to Kevin O’Connell who finally broke his 20-nomination losing streak (20! nominations!) last night. His work in Hacksaw Ridge won him an Oscar in Best Sound Mixing. Congratulations, O’Connell!
