Another sci-fi film may be added under his belt as Oscar Isaac is currently in negotiations to star in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake. According to TheWrap, Isaac joins Timothée Chalamet and Dave Bautista for Legendary’s film adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel. Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Rampling, and Stellan Skarsgard are also part of the cast as well.
In the original novel, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides (Chalamet), whose family is tasked to control the desert planet Arrakis. Since the planet is the only producer of a highly coveted spice, the ruling of Arrakis is contested among noble families. After the betrayal on Paul’s family, he leads an uprising to regain the jurisdiction of Arrakis. The story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature. Isaac is in talks to play the role of the father of Chalamet’s character, Duke Leto.
Legendary gained the rights back in 2016 after Paramount dropped it in 2011. Dune was previously adapted by David Lynch in 1984 and was not a box-office hit. Attempts to adapt the film again were made in the following decades. The reboot will be directed by Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival helmer and also co-producing with Mary Parent and Cale Boyter. Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts are signed on to write the script.
Isaac is not a newbie in the sci-fi genre for he has already appeared in several films in the recent years. Most notable is his performance as Poe Dameron in the new Star Wars trilogy and also in the film adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation with Natalie Portman. Isaac was part of the cast of the 2016 film Ex Machina as well.
Isaac’s schedule for this year is packed as he is set to reprise his role as Poe in Star Wars: Episode IX, and is also cast alongside Ben Affleck to star in the Netflix action film Triple Frontier.
