It is Homecoming Night in Bayview High. Keely gives the opening remarks, and the party starts. Janae brings her flask and spikes her drink. TJ is in attendance, back from his three-week suspension. Keely tells Cooper she’s worried about Addy, who has not been picking up and replying to their text.
Bronwyn and Maeve arrive, followed by Vanessa and Jake. After a short while, Addy comes with Nate on his motorcycle. Addy tells Bronwyn not to ignore her messages again, and Nate tells her they need to talk.
They gather in a room, and Addy reveals she was followed the previous night, and if Nate hasn’t shown up, she’ll probably be dead. She discloses she knows who posted their secrets, just as Janae walks in. Flashback: Janae and Simon talk about Jake, who asks other students to vote for him and Addy for Homecoming King and Queen so they’ll get invited to his party. Simon expresses his disgust for Jake and Janae reminds him they used to be friends. Simon tells her he has always been an ass, but then summer came, and he grew abs, so Simon drew the line between asses with abs. Simon comes up with the idea of having a public database so that people like Jake get exposed for who they really are. Janae suggests an app.
Back to the present, Cooper and Brownyn are adamant about not trusting Janae. Janae admits she posted their secrets and then got locked out before the picture of the four of them and Bronwyn’s video was posted. She tells them about pop-up messages that read: “Simon says: back off.” Addy announces they think they know who has been stalking them: TJ. Janae explains on the day of Simon’s murder, she saw TJ grabbing Simon in the hall and having an argument, which is why Simon got detention. Addy backs her up by saying it makes sense because TJ is obsessed with her, and when she blocked him and he got suspended, someone revoked Janae’s access to AboutThat. Cooper defends TJ, saying he’s the chillest guy he’s ever met. Nate tells him TJ might be smarter than he looks and sounds. Cooper tells them it is ridiculous, but Addy says if it is so ridiculous, then Nate would already be in Tijuana instead of helping with her plan.
Cooper asks about Addy’s plan, and she explains that TJ is there. She plans to get close to him enough so Nate can swing by and steal his phone. She explains that once they have his phone, they can ask Maeve to retrace his steps and find out if he could be at the amusement park last night. Cooper disagrees with the plan and argues if they are correct, then TJ can be a killer, so no one should get close to him. Nate agrees and tells Cooper to do it because TJ won’t be suspicious of him because they’re friends. Addy begs them to work together, even for just one night. Bronwyn agrees but refuses to let Maeve participate in their plan and tells them she doesn’t trust Janae.
After their meeting, Bronwyn and Nate talk. Nate tries to explain his plan to leave, but Bronwyn is focused on finding out what happened to Simon. She says if Janae is telling the truth, TJ would have been in detention too, but he wasn’t. Nate tells her the altercation would at least be in his record, so they decide to go into Principal Gupta’s office so they can find out.
Cooper was about to approach TJ and carry on with their plan when Jake reminds him how lucky he is to be good at baseball, but he can lose everything by staying close to the Murder Club.
Bronwyn and Nate almost get caught while looking for TJ’s file in the principal’s office. Bronwyn takes the opportunity to ask Nate about his mom. Nate tells her he lied to her because it was easier than the truth. He says he doesn’t want her to know about his mom’s mental health problems, drug problems, and how she abandoned him because it’s not how he would have wanted her to look at him. They hide under the desk and get too close to each other that Nate is about to kiss her. Bronwyn refuses to kiss him and says he still has a long ride to Mexico.
Jane tries to steal TJ’s phone but fails. She sees TJ about to leave the party, so she signals Addy to do her thing. Addy asks him to dance with her. Addy is about to get TJ’s phone on the dance floor, but Jake cuts in and insists she dance with him. While dancing, Jake and Addy seem to have made up. Seeing TJ about to leave, Janae snatches the Homecoming King and Queen envelope from Keely and announces the winners: TJ and Addy. This stops TJ in his tracks, but he and Addy refuse to go up the stage for their dance.
Janae then proceeds to give a speech about Simon being dead. She says he was murdered, and the killer might be in that dance. “Whoever you are, you will never get away with it because I will find you, and I will end you,” she threatens. She gets interrupted by a school representative, but she does not leave the stage without telling everyone that the Bayview Four are innocent.
Addy tells Nate and Bronwyn that she lost TJ. Bronwyn tells her TJ indeed got into a fight with Simon but strangely didn’t get detention. Nate reminds them they still need to find his phone, so Addy volunteers to go to the parking lot to look for TJ’s Jeep and instructs Nate to check the bathroom. She asks Bronwyn to text her when she finds him. Maeve asks Bronwyn to tell her what’s going on, but Bronwyn refuses to involve her, so she walks away.
Janae throws up after her speech, and Maeve finds her at the bottom of the staircase. She tells Maeve to go because she is disgusting after throwing up. Maeve tells her she has leukemia, so she does not mind vomiting. Maeve comforts Janae because she sees she’s still mourning Simon. Flashback: a photo of Simon, Maeve, and Janae comes out of the photo booth. Simon puts pressure on Janae to tell Maeve she likes her. Janae then calls him out for flirting with Maeve all day and for not being a friend to her for awhile. She tells him all he has been is AboutThat with legs. Simon tells her to seize the moment before it’s gone and warns Janae that if she doesn’t make a move on Maeve, he will.
Back to the present, Janae is about to confess her love to Maeve when her phone beeps. It’s another Simon Says message saying: “you wanna know who killed your friend?” The message disappears, then another message flashes: “Open Locker #102.” The message disappears again. Maeve sees these and tells Janae they should go. Janae tells her she does not like to walk her into an obvious trap. Maeve disregards her and walks away. Janae follows shortly but loses her.
Keely asks Cooper to dance. Cooper says he’s not in the mood, but he reluctantly proceeds to the dance floor after Keely tells him people are talking about him. “Let’s put on a show,” she says. On the dance floor, Cooper daydreams and imagines it is Kris he was dancing with. When reality hits him, he tells Keely he wants to stop pretending and leaves Keely on the dance floor.
Addy goes into the parking lot and finds TJ’s Jeep, but not TJ. She looks around and sees someone smoking on the rooftop. She decides to go.
In a secluded spot in the hall, Bronwyn and Nate meet. Bronwyn says she does not understand why Nate has just given up. He says Wheeler has put a price on his head after interrogation. “Because you wouldn’t give me away with the laptop?” Bronwyn asks. He nods and says maybe Addy is right: they can solve the murder before he takes off. Bronwyn comes closer to him and unties his bowtie. They were about to kiss when Janae barges in and asks if they’ve seen Maeve. This concerns Bronwyn, so she asks Janae what‘s going on. Janae stutters with her words. Nate receives a text from Addy asking them to go to the rooftop.
Cooper receives the same text from Addy, but he sees Keely walking out of the hall and follows her. “We had a plan,” she cries. Cooper explains to her they do not need to be dating to go to college together. He assures her he will talk to her parents and protect her from Zach, her crazy ex but as a friend. He says he needs her to be his girlfriend, but she doesn’t need him to be her boyfriend. “I think I love you,” Keely declares. Cooper tells her she only loves the idea of them. Keely says she was in love or she wouldn’t have done the things she did. Cooper asks her what she’s done, and Keely explains Simon threatened to expose Cooper in AboutThat if she did not give her something juicier. In exchange, Keely told Simon she saw Addy and TJ at the beach. She adds she told Simon how TJ has always been obsessed with Addy. Knowing this, Cooper realizes Addy might be in trouble if she is alone with TJ.
Addy decides to make a move on TJ because she thinks no one will come to help her. She tries to get close to TJ by saying Jake doesn’t deserve her. She successfully gets the phone, but TJ tells her she cannot just pout her lips and make everything better again. She attempts to break away and run from TJ, but he catches her, and his phone falls to the ground. He asks why she stole the phone and orders her to explain while drawing her near the rooftop edge. Cooper comes and distracts TJ. Addy takes TJ’s phone and runs towards the exit, and they lock TJ out.
Janae, Bronwyn, and Nate rush to the lockers, but Janae forgets the locker number because she is drunk. They try other lockers, but they’re locked. Bronwyn pressures Janae to remember the locker number and reminds her Maeve’s out there and she could be in danger, and she should care. Janae then admits to caring for Maeve. They decide to split up so they can find Maeve faster.
Flashback: at Jake’s party, Janae looks for Maeve and finds her making out with Simon. That’s when she asked Nate for drugs.
Nate finds locker #102; it is unlocked. They discover it is Addy’s locker. Janae receives a text from Maeve asking her to come to the north stairwell alone. The three of them rush to her location. When they get there, Maeve shows them what she found in Addy’s locker: the EpiPen missing from Simon’s bag. Addy and Copper show up from the rooftop. Addy tells them they got TJ’s phone, and Maeve tells her she might go to jail, holding the EpiPen. Addy panics and tells them she has no idea how the pen got into her locker. She says whoever is texting them might have placed the pen there and says it might be TJ. Bronwyn asks Maeve to check TJ’s phone and instructs Janae to go with her to make sure she’s safe.
Brownyn suggests they get rid of the EpiPen because it’s evidence, and they cannot go to the cops with it because they won’t believe them. She says she knows Addy did not leave the evidence in her locker, and they’re clearly being set up. She explains if they destroy the EpiPen, they are committing a crime together, and there is no going back. They proceed to the lab and prepare to light it on fire. “What’s one more felony between friends, right?” Nate asks.
The four meet Maeve and Janae and tell them the EpiPen has been taken care of. Maeve says she’s done with TJ’s phone, and he cannot be at the water park the previous night. They conclude the killer is still out there, and Janae worries she made herself a target for nothing. Maeve tells her it wasn’t for nothing because it was for Simon.
Flashback: Simon goes to Janae’s house after the incident at Jake’s party. Simon refuses to apologize at first but insists on giving Janae an update. He says he’s backing off on Maeve because he’s got a lot going on at school, and she’s a distraction. She says it’s not about Maeve and makes him apologize. Simon does, Janae tells him she loves him, and they’re okay again.
Back to the present, Janae walks out as she cries. Maeve goes after her. When Maeve catches up with Janae, Janae tells her to stop showing up for her. Maeve starts walking away when Janae speaks. She says she hates most people, but she doesn’t hate Maeve. She finally tells Maeve she likes her. Maeve comes closer and touches Janae’s face before kissing her.
At the library, the Bayview Four talk about how no one else was in the room except them, and Ms. Avery didn’t have a motive. Cooper tells them they don’t know for sure she didn’t have a motive because Simon might not post all the secrets he knows. Cooper explains he just found out Keely tried to give Simon something better to keep their secret from coming out. Addy scoffs and realizes Keely told Simon about her and TJ. They get interrupted when a camera flash illuminates the room.
They all run to the door to catch whoever took a photo of them. They eventually catch her: it’s Vanessa. They confront her, but she denies being their stalker. She acts fast and uploads the photo just as the Bayview Four walk into the hall. Everyone stares at them, so Nate suggests they go. Addy says she is not giving the win to Vanessa. Instead of leaving, the four of them dance and enjoy the attention, thinking they are on their last Homecoming. While dancing, Addy sees TJ and approaches him. She explains she thought he killed Simon and apologizes for playing with his feelings. She says she never took them seriously because she knew TJ deserved better. TJ tells her he did everything for her. Addy asks him if Simon came to him and realizes Simon actually did. TJ reveals he traded Ms. Avery’s secret for theirs.
Nate and Bronwyn are dancing on the dance floor when the music changes to a slow one. Bronwyn asks Nate to stay for her, saying that it is too much for her to ask, but she knows she’ll regret it if she doesn’t. They kiss and kiss some more when the lights turn on. Detective Wheeler comes and arrests Nate. The police find the EpiPens stolen from the nurse’s office on his motorcycle.
Our Thoughts
Poor TJ, we really thought he was the bad guy. It turns out he was actually a good person who was just so into Addy, just like Keely was so into Cooper. Well, love really makes a fool out of everybody. After all, it was love that made Janae OD on drugs. And oh, can we just point out that while Nate sold her the drugs, Simon is not entirely without fault for what happened to Janae. It might have been all his fault because he knew Janae liked Maeve, but he still chose to make out with her. What kind of friend does that? Our hate for Simon grows stronger with each episode. Speaking of things we hate, Vanessa retakes the cake. Doesn’t she have any other thing to do except annoy us? Anyway, we also learn Ms. Avery did have a motive from the very start. This changes everything because everyone has been crucifying the Bayview Four when there is another person who could have been guilty of the crime all along. What is Ms. Avery’s secret? We’re dying to know. Yup. Pun intended.
