HBO Max had been telling the story of an NBA legend with their new show Winning Time, but MGM is looking to tell a story adjacent to that—the rise of Nike’s Air Jordans.
Air is set to come out this April, and it’s directed by Ben Affleck with Matt Damon as the star. Now we have a new trailer and it teases the origin of one of the most popular basketball shoes ever made. Check it:
Here’s the official synopsis:
Sonny Vaccaro and Nike pursue basketball rookie Michael Jordan, creating a partnership that revolutionizes the world of sports and contemporary culture.
According to Variety, the movie’s logline also reads, “This moving story follows the career-defining gamble of an unconventional team with everything on the line, the uncompromising vision of a mother who knows the worth of her son’s immense talent, and the basketball phenom who would become the greatest of all time.”
Based on the trailer, you can see that the film has managed to gather quite the star-studded cast with members like Jason Bateman, Viola Davis, Chris Messina, Marlon Wayans, and Chris Tucker. Of course, the biggest figure in this movie is no doubt Michael Jordan himself, and though I suspect him to show up in the movie, I think they’re going to be keeping his appearance a secret until Nike lands his deal in the movie.
I’m actually excited to see Damon and Affleck teaming up onscreen again. Though they were kind of enemies in Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, it’s good to see the two on the same side for something that Affleck is directing.
Air is set to hit theaters on April 5.
