We already had funny vampires in the big screen with What We Do in the Shadows, but how about a new show focused on Dracula’s familiar?
Universal has just dropped a new trailer for Renfield and it stars Nicholas Hoult as Dracula’s most lotal servant with Nicolas Cage playing the iconic blood sucker. Watch this:
Here’s the synopsis:
Evil doesn’t span eternity without a little help.
In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men franchise) stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Oscar® winner Nicolas Cage). Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.
In the original Dracula by Bram Stoker, Renfield was Dracula’s familiar who was thought to have gone insane, but was actually just under the mind control powers of Dracula. Here, the film actually gives him some kind of superpowers with the trigger being him eating spiders.
I’ll admit, I really didn’t need the superhero angle with the story, but if that’s the direction they want to go, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Cage is an absolute delight as an artist, and I just want to see him go all out with the role of one of pop-culture’s most iconic monsters.
Catch Renfield when it hits theaters on April 14.
