The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office dismissed the sexual assault case filed against pop singer Nick Carter due to the expiration of the statute of limitations in 2013, according to TheWrap. “Therefore, an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence is not warranted,” says the paperwork.
The former Backstreet Boy was accused of sexually assaulting an unidentified woman in 2003. She was reported to be 18 at the time. The case was first filed in the Santa Monica Police Department and was presented to the D.A. on July 31.
Carter came under more heat when Melissa Schuman broke her silence in a blog post posted on November 2017, accusing him of rape that happened that same year. In the post, Schuman said that she had intentions to come out with her story the moment the news broke of the reported assault but instead remained silent to keep her career intact. She said that she was discouraged to do so by her manager at the time. In the post, she wrote, “I was told I would likely be buried in humiliation, accused of being fame hungry, and it would ultimately hurt me professionally as well as publicly.”
She then expresses her empathy with the unidentified woman whose assault charges filed against Carter was received with backlash. “There is nothing worse than being victimized and having others call you a liar. Or claim you are looking for 15 mins of fame. Let me ask this simple question. Who the hell wants to be famous for being raped?” she wrote.
The pop star revealed that she had filed a police report against Carter in early February after being encouraged to do so by the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN). Her allegations, however, received a substantial amount of backlash from social media.

Carter was “shocked and saddened” by the accusation made by Schuman, saying that she never expressed to him that what they did together was not consensual. Carter added that he respected her personally and professionally and her accusations were “contrary to [his] nature and everything [he holds] dear.” He has received overwhelming support from his family and fans.
