Next Ghostbusters Movie Gets a 2023 Release Date

Sony has successfully brought back the Ghostbusters franchise with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and now everyone is curious when the Spenglers are going to be returning to bust some ghost butt. What’s news is, we finally have a release date for the sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife is now set to come to theaters on December 20, 2023. While the first movie took place in a small town in the middle of nowhere, the sequel is confirmed to bring the characters back to the city of New York, working out of the Ghostbusters firehouse.

Director Jason Reitman had this to say about the sequel:

“At the end of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ecto-1 is driving into Manhattan, returning to its home. And before anyone ever heard the title Afterlife, we called it Rust City. Which would not have made sense to anyone until they saw the movie. The code name for the next movie is ‘Firehouse.’”

While Afterlife does pay homage to the original franchise, I still felt that the movie lacked that ‘starting-a-business’ feel as well as that cynical jab at capitalism with the Ghostbusters also focusing on selling their merch besides the ghost hunting.

With Gozer finally caught, I’m hoping that the franchise moves on to focus on some other kind of monster. Maybe they can get something out of the animated series. I just really hope they manage to bring in something new rather than playing it too safe with the IP (like Afterlife kind of did).

The next Ghostbusters movie hits theaters Dec. 20, 2023.
