New Trailer for Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers is Surprisingly Meta

Disney had already brought back DuckTales, and now they’re set to bring another property from the late ‘80s back—and it’s Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. While Disney won’t be doing a new series, they have released a trailer for a movie, and it could very well be a spinoff of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?.

Watch this:

Here’s the synopsis:

In “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers,” Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now. It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip (John Mulaney) has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale (Andy Samberg), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former cast mate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend’s life.

It’s not mentioned which character goes missing in the trailer, but it looks like it’s going to be Gadget Hackwrench, who doesn’t appear in any of the present timeline sequences. We should also catch some cameos from other Disney characters, like Scrooge McDuck, who we see swimming in a pool of coins.

I have to admit, this concept is surprisingly meta for a studio like Disney, but maybe the risky storyline is exactly why they decided to just release the movie on Disney+. Either way, it looks like a fun ride, and there could be some commentary on studios bringing back old franchises for some nostalgia pandering.

Catch Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers when it debuts on Disney+ on May 20.
