New Mutants Reshoots Still Ongoing, Director Simon Kinberg Confirms

Digital Spy has confirmed from Director Simon Kinberg that reshoots for the upcoming New Mutants movie is still ongoing. Kinberg went on to add that the reshoots are only taking place now due to scheduling conflicts between the cast members. “What’s happening is we’re gonna do reshoots this year on that film and it has a new release date from Disney,” Kinberg says.

Nevertheless, the news does nothing to allay the fears from fans that the delay and reshoots only prove that the movie might be a flop. Marvel and X-Men fans will also remember this, as it isn’t the first time the movie has undergone reshoots, pushbacks, and even fears of cancellation following the Disney and FOX merger.

New Mutants: Reshoots and Delayed Releases

The thirteenth and final installment in Fox’s X-Men film series was originally scheduled for release in April 2018 but got delayed until February 2019. This wasn’t to be its final release date as the movie was again pushed back to August 2019. However, as a result of the Disney and FOX merger, New Mutants was again pushed back to April 2020. The new date seems most likely to not be changed, at least for the time being.

Should there be cause for concern? The answer to that is not as easy as it may seem. First reports claimed the reshoots were supposedly being done to add a new character to the movie and make the movie more frightening due to the success of FOX’s 2017 It. It is important to note that audiences responded well to the initial New Mutants teaser trailer released in October 2017, a reaction which no doubt encouraged the studio to amp up its horror elements.

The studio also claimed to push back the movie from its 2018 release date to avoid hurting the theatrical run and success of Deadpool 2, which was in theatres at the time.

However, stars of the movie, including Game of Throne’s Maisie Williams haven’t done much to quell the fears fans may have. Although she was in support of the delay in 2018 saying that it gave the cast and crew more time to make a better movie, she seems to have backtracked on that. In an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, the Game of Thrones actress bluntly quipped, “Who knows when the f**k that’s gonna come out.”

At this juncture though, there is reason to be hopeful. Kinberg in his interview spoke of Marvel’s ability to schedule pick-ups into their budget, something FOX has never been good at. This should come as good news for fans as it shows Disney’s willingness to continue with the project and not shutting it down as once feared. And with the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, it’s safe to say the movie is in good hands now it’s being overseen by Marvel, as a result of the Disney and FOX merger.

New Mutants Cast and Crew

The movie is directed and co-written by Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars) and stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Anya Taylor Joy (Split) and box office icon, Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro) among others.

The New Mutants is set for an April 2020 release date. You can watch the teaser trailer below:
