New M3GAN Featurette Hypes Up the Next Level Killer Doll

The Child’s Play reboot may not have worked, but James Wan and Jason Blum are set to try their own spin on the killer doll franchise with M3GAN. The movie is set to come out next month, and we have a new featurette looking into the film’s take on modern technology and the horrors they could be capable of.

While the killer doll story has been told time and again by James Wan, the big difference with M3GAN is that she isn’t some kind of fantasy creature brought to life with magic, but an actual doll that is informed by technology that is very present today.

Though modern toys may not have the same kind of murderous intent that M3GAN has when it comes to protecting Cady, the film is said to be looking at the possibilities of technology, and is also a commentary on how modern humans have gotten so dependent on it over the years.

Here’s the official synopsis:

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House), Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems–a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.  

M3GAN comes to theaters on Jan. 6.
