We know that Guillermo del Toro will be debuting his animated take on Pinocchio this year, but Disney is also gearing up for the retelling of their version of the boy puppet.
While the previews have been pretty mysterious about the reveal, we now have our first look at Pinocchio in Disney’s Pinocchio:

We don’t know what this Pinocchio will look like when it’s moving around, but it certainly does feel like a faithful representation of the original design of the puppet from the 1940s movie.
Though Disney and Netflix are set to tell their own versions of Pinocchio, their approaches couldn’t be any more different. While Disney is going their mix of CG and live-action route, Netflix’s Pinocchio is going to be using stop-motion animation.
Storywise, Disney is still expected to lean in on the kid-friendly themes of the original film, while the Netflix version is going to be discussing heavier themes about existence and what it means to be truly alive.
With a release set for September, Disney’s Pinocchio sure has left a lot of space between itself and Guilldermo del Toro’s film. Though I’m sure that both versions have a lot of amazing talent behind them, I think the audience will be deciding by the end of the year which boy puppet is going to be the superior adaptation of the original story.
Pinocchio starring Tom Hanks and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to release on Disney+ this Sept. 8.
