Netflix Gains Worldwide Rights to Cannes Winners ‘Atlantics’ and ‘I Lost My Body’

Netflix just jumped on the Cannes hype as it obtains the worldwide rights for two Cannes Film Festival Winners—Atlantics and I Lost My Body (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Before Netflix gained the rights to the two films, Atlantics and I Lost My Body both got significant recognition at the festival. Mati Diop’s Atlantics was awarded the Grand Prix Award, while I Lost My Body, the animated feature film directed by Jeremy Clapin, received a Nespresso Grand Prize and the top award in Critics’ Week sidebar at Cannes.

While Netflix has the rights to both movies, the network giant’s rights to I Lost My Body and Atlantic do not include screenings in China, Benelux, Turkey, and France. It also has SVOD rights for 36-months following the theatrical release in France.

I Lost My Body follows the bizarre story of a right hand and his owner named Naoufel as they got separated by accident. Naoufel, who was left as an orphan because of a tragic accident that killed his parents. Following this, he was sent to Paris to stay with his uncle and later on fell in love with a librarian named Gabrielle. Naoufel decided to pursue her and for the first time became the captain of his life. The story goes to lead to Naoufel and his right hand surpasses challenges that come their way to be able to reunite. The film began with a lot of gore and creepiness. But later on, it changed into something that touches the heart and emotions. It tackles chances, regrets, and overcoming challenges to be able to make yourself whole again somehow.

Atlantics: Social Consciousness With A Touch Of  Romance

Atlantics is the story of Ada, a 17-year-old girl who’s in love with a man named Souleiman. However, Ada is set to marry a rich man. One night, Souleiman sails to Spain to find a better future without Ada knowing. Several days later, Souleiman comes back and disaster follows. Although it may come across as just another love story, the film highlights ideas of political issues, class, and spiritual values. It is a combination of social consciousness and supernatural elements.

The two films caught the eye of the critics in Cannes for its unconventional storyline and how it was presented. Netflix is yet to announce when the two movies will be made available on the platform.
