Netflix Reveals New Latinx Family Comedy Series ‘The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia’

Friends producer Seth Kurland and Saved By the Bell’s Mario Lopez are collaborating on Netflix’ new Latinx family comedy series The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia.
According to Variety, Netflix has ordered 16 episodes of the multi-cam comedy The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia. In the new series, Ashley Garcia takes the spotlight as the world’s only 15-year-old robotics engineer and rocket scientist who gets a chance to work with NASA. So, she moves to live with her Uncle Victor, a pro football player turned high school coach who’s also a fun-loving man who’s never met a responsibility he can’t shirk.
The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia and Netflix Latinx Shows
New up and coming star Paulina Chavez will star as the 15-year-old Ashley. She has appeared on the movies Day 5 and Padre Pio. On the other hand, Jencarlos Canela who has starred in series such as “Telenovela” will take the role of Victor. Canela is also slated to appear in the upcoming Grand Hotel series.
Kurland will serve as an executive producer of the show along with Lopez and David Kendall. But, he will also serve as writer. Aside from Friends, Kurland also has Melissa and Joey, Speechless, Growing Pains, and Boy Meets World under his belt. Kendall, on the other hand, will also be writing as well as serve as showrunner. Mark Schulman at 3 Arts Entertainment will be serving as series consultant.
The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia comes after Netflix canceled the Latin-centered family comedy reboot One Day at a Time after three seasons. On the other hand, the streaming giant opted to renew the Latinx coming of age comedy series On My Block for a third season. Aside from that, Netflix has a couple of upcoming shows in the live-action family comedy series department including Family Reunion, Team Kaylie, Malibu Rescue, and The Baby-Sitters Club.
