Netflix Confirms Development of a 'Death Note' Movie Sequel

In line with running down their projects for the film route, Netflix has confirmed the development of a sequel for Adam Wingard’s live-action Death Note in The Hollywood Reporter’s report.

Aside from Americanizing the cast and settings, Wingard’s live-action movie stuck to the original manga story. Though it didn’t receive high critical acclaim, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos called it a “sizable success.” The streaming giant has thrown it into the development pit along with a Bright sequel as it ventures into the world of movie franchises according to ScreenRant.

THR also reports that Greg Russo is also responsible for the script for Death Note 2. He is also currently working on the script for the Resident Evil movie reboot. However, no word has been said if Wingard will continue to direct this sequel. In addition to that, no details have been released regarding the return of key players from the first Death Note movie.

Wingard has notably opened the first movie to a sequel by the number of loose ends left untied. In opposition to the anime and manga series, Wingard leaves both Light (Nat Wolff) and detective L (Lakeith Stanfield) alive. L only finds a page of the Death Note with the knowledge of who the killer is. Meanwhile, Light has the Death Note back in his possession. Fans are left wondering what both sides would do with what they have.

Aside from Death Note and Bright, Netflix is also betting big on Six Underground, an action-thriller directed by Michael Bay starring Ryan Reynolds. Other projects set for release are Haifaa Al-Mansour’s Nappily Ever After, Chris Pine’s historical epic Outlaw King, Tamara Jenkins’ Private Life, and Sara Colangelo’s The Kindergarten Teacher.
