A lot of fans were expecting six villains to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home to form the Sinister Six, but we only got a villain count until five. With new concept art from the movie coming out online, it’s been revealed that Mysterio was at some point expected to appear in the film.

Seeing that Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme, it would make sense that he would have the upper hand on Mysterio and his illusion drones, but if Peter Parker can beat Strange with math, than Mysterio might have a fighting chance as well. Besides, it would have been a visual feast to see Mysterio just try to out-magic Doctor Strange.
We don’t know why the part was cut, but it’s possible that they had no way to include Mysterio into the film without making it too convoluted. Besides, Mysterio staying dead will keep the people angry at Peter; revealing he’s alive will just undo Mysterio’s big lie about Spider-Man killing him.
Hopefully this leaves the door open for a comeback in the future. If we were to get a Sinister Six in the MCU, I would love for all of them to come from the main MCU timeline—that means a new Doc Ock, Green Goblin, Electro, etc. I love the characters we got, but I would love to see a new spin on them as well.
For now, catch Spider-Man: No Way Home now showing in theaters.
