'Muppets' Director James Bobin In Talks To Direct Ryan Reynolds 'Clue' Remake

20th Century Fox’s Clue remake is moving forward with a new director. James Bobin, who is most known for directing 2011’s The Muppets, is in talks to direct the remake starring Ryan Reynolds.

In the latter half of 2019, Jason Bateman was reportedly on board to helm the film. He was also slated to co-star in it. Unfortunately, the actor departed the project due to scheduling conflicts with his Netflix series Ozark.

Reynolds is set to star in the remake. And he’s also developing and producing the project via his Maximum Effort banner together with Hasbro’s AllSpark Pictures. Reynolds will also be reuniting with Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick who penned the script for the film. Reese and Wernick also worked with Reynolds in Deadpool 2 and 6 Underground. Aside from Reynolds, however, a cast has not yet been set.

Clue is based on a popular Hasbro board game where players take on the role of guests in a mansion while trying to reveal the identity of a killer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this isn’t the first time a remake effort was made for the film. Before Fox, Universal was adapting an adaptation in 2011 with Gore Verbinski at the helm. But, it was dropped. Then, it was picked back up again in 2016 with Fox.

It was first adapted into a movie by Jonathan Lynn in 1985. It starred Tim Curry who played the role of the butler leading Miss Scarlet, Col. Mustard, and other characters around the game to discover which one of them killed the host. Other members of the cast included Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Madeline Kahn, Lesley Ann Warren, Martin Mull, and Eileen Brennan. In line with the nature of the board game, the film also featured three different endings with each theatre showing a different ending. Since then, it developed a cult following.

James Bobin wrote and directed for comedy stars like Sacha Baron Cohen and the comedy duo Flight of the Conchords. Bobin made his big-screen debut with The Muppets with Jason Siegel and Amy Adams. Then, he went on to direct its 2014 sequel Muppets Most Wanted. James Bobin also worked with Disney in the Alice in Wonderland Alice Through The Looking Glass. His most recent project is the Dora the Explorer adaptation Dora and the Lost City of Gold with Paramount. The film earned $120.7 million worldwide from a $49 million budget.
