We’ve been speculating about when mutants would appear in the MCU since WandaVision, but we finally got something close to the word ‘mutant’ with the end of Ms. Marvel, hinting that Kamala Khan is the MCU’s first mutant.
With star Iman Vellani not being shy about being a comic book nerd, she says that she freaked out when she read the script for the final episode. She tells Marvel.com:
“They sent me, and only me, the draft [of the final episode], and I immediately freaked out… I emailed Kevin Feige in all caps. I was like, are you doing this like for real? Are you sure? I’m so honored! I was like yelling at him through an email. I was freaking out. This is the biggest deal in the world, and the fact that it’s happening in our show is crazy.”
Just like with Kamala’s ‘hard light’ powers, this is also another change in the character’s origin. In the comics, Kamala is actually an Inhuman, even crossing over with Black Bolt at one point. The change of her being a mutant doesn’t really change much though; plus it could open up a possible crossover with the X-Men—Kamala has already had a buddy adventure with Wolverine at some point.
Just like the build-up to Endgame, it looks like Marvel is going to be taking this mutant reveal slowly. We don’t know when they’ll finally take the spotlight, but we could have more revealed when Kamala returns for The Marvels which is set to hit theaters July 28, 2023.
