Money Heist Season 1 Episode 8 Recap

[00:00:10] Raquel missed her opportunity to close the case. The Professor escaped from her grasp, and she now had to face another challenge. She already had Rio and Tokyo’s identities, and soon she would also have Berlin’s, but she needed the Professor in order to stop this heist, and she failed.

[00:02:10] Raquel was cleaning up when she heard the news; they were debating about her ability to take on this task. On top of all this, Paula wants to go live with her aunt and father. Raquel told her that her father wasn’t good, but she disagreed. It seemed her father was brainwashing her. Her grandmother tried to talk her out of it, but Raquel stopped her. Raquel offered Paula some alone time. They would go out for hamburgers, and once the heist was over, they would go to the Canary Islands for a small vacation. Paula was delighted. She agreed to her mother’s offer, and the two of them went out to eat. Raquel’s mother stayed to continue watching the news.

[00:05:30] The crew was eating outside the villa when Tokyo asked the Professor why the police wouldn’t enter the mint. Denver jokingly answered that it’s because they will lock the doors from the inside. The Professor explained that they wouldn’t enter because Spain would not let them. He provided them with an example, the group of people that camped in Puerta del Sol. The police didn’t harm these people because they had the support of the rest of Spain. Tokyo doubted the Professor, but he explained that they would always have the people’s support. He explained further that even if the police entered, they would have weapons and explosives. Also, no one will be able to distinguish hostages from robbers; hence they will not risk it, especially with minors involved.

[00:08:00] Raquel read an article about Spaniards being treated as second-class citizens. She confronted Colonel Prieto and told him to fulfill his promise and tell the press that it was their decision. He told her that they couldn’t do that, but she had the support of the government of Spain. Raquel didn’t care for the government of Spain. She cared about her family and what they would think of her. Prieto explained that no one would remember what happened once everything was over. She only needed to end things peacefully, and she would be a national hero, but if everything ended in bloodshed, it would be the end of them.

[00:10:00] Rio told the Professor that he had doubts as to how they will get out of the mint. He told Rio that they will leave through a tunnel. Denver laughed, saying that the police would figure it out within 2 minutes, but the Professor revealed the truth behind their plan. The Professor planned to dig a tunnel to confuse the police. The police will think that they are escaping through that tunnel, but in reality, they will escape using another tunnel that was built ahead of time.

[00:11:00] He continued explaining about a tunnel he had built five years ago that goes under vault number three. He told them that they needed to dig under vault 3 to find the tunnel and escape. Helsinki asked the Professor how long will it take to dig through the vault. Moscow told them that it would take at least 10 to 12 days. Berlin told them that they would print 200 million per day, and Nairobi did the math to find they will have about 2.4 billion euros printed by the time they have the tunnel ready.

[00:13:10] Angel reported to Raquel that the ammonia and alcohol were used on the car minutes before they arrived. Raquel asked if there were any leads about the homeless man. He told her that they didn’t find any traces. Angel also reported that they did find a fingerprint on the button that she pulled out of the car and that they will have the file in a few minutes. While waiting, Raquel asked all personnel to leave the command center for a few minutes except for Angel and Colonel Prieto. She told them that they have a mole within the force because it’s not a coincidence that someone got to the car before they did. She instructed Colonel Prieto to find out who the mole was. They received the file and got the records; it was Berlin.

[00:15:20] Helsinki woke Arturo up. He checked his temperature and tended to his wound. He told him that there is no infection and that he no longer had a fever. Meanwhile, Denver entered the vault to find Monica sleeping. He woke her up to check how she was feeling. She asked him what he was doing there, and he told her that it was his time to sleep. That’s why he thought of dropping by to check on her. Monica told Denver that he could stay and rest there, so he sat across her and slept.

[00:19:10] Angel briefed Raquel on the details about Berlin, based on his file. They didn’t have any records of his passport; he also didn’t have any friends or family. Angel thought of interviewing his cellmate in one of the prisons that he had been to. Raquel told him to arrange the papers to get that interview. Based on their records, Berlin was a self-centered narcissist with delusions of grandeur who lacked empathy. An eccentric man with megalomaniacal tendencies, cannot differentiate good from evil, has a good sense of humor, and a pathological need to make a good impression on strangers.

[00:19:50] Berlin showed these characteristics when he addressed the hostages. He ended the rumors that Monica was dead by confirming her execution. He thanked everyone because their heist was going well, and they were ahead of schedule in terms of printing money. He applauded Mr. Torres, who helped them achieve this milestone. Lastly, he welcomed Arturo back for surviving. After all of the theatrics, one hostage raised her hand and wanted to talk with Berlin in private; he took the hostage with him and left.

[00:24:20] Raquel wanted Angel to provide the press with every bit of information that they have on Berlin. He questioned why and Raquel told him that she wanted to know what Spain would think of him. Colonel Prieto told her that she wouldn’t win the public’s opinion as they loved these types of people. He convinced her to smear Berlin’s image with fake news and propaganda. Raquel gave in, she was desperate, and she gave Prieto the go signal to leak the news. Angel was against defaming Berlin, but she explained that everything was getting personal. Eventually, Angel was on her side, showing that he would do anything for her. He told her that since they were going to defame Berlin, they might as well defame anyone else who gets in their way especially her ex-husband.

[00:26:20] Angel told her that he would testify that he saw the bruises and everything else. Just as he was getting Raquel’s trust, Suarez entered the command center along with Almansa. They told him that the caretaker of the scrapyard told them that someone was asking for the car an hour before they came. Raquel ordered Almansa to check photos of Russians that have been questioned by the police. She also wanted a sketch done to possibly get the identity of the homeless man.

[00:28:40] Denver woke up due to the heat inside the vault. He took off his shirt and lay down, and went back to sleep. Rio on the other hand was handing out toiletries to the hostages. He apologized to Alison for tying her too tightly; he told her that he had no choice as she pointed a rifle at his face. Alison told him that it was the second craziest thing that she did. The first one was taking ballet lessons behind her father’s back. Alison had teenage problems; she told Rio that her father chose everything for her, and it was the one time that she chose anything for herself.

[00:30:15] Tokyo arrived to see the two of them talking. Rio immediately left and Tokyo stopped Alison from leaving the bathroom. She asked her what they were talking about; Alison told her that they were only talking about her father being bossy. Tokyo acted upon her jealousy, she asked her questions about Rio, and eventually, she kissed Alison. Suddenly, Moscow emerged from one of the bathroom stalls. He heard everything that Tokyo said about Rio being her boyfriend up to the part that she threatened Alison.

[00:33:30] Raquel interrogated Berlin’s cellmate. He was arrested for sexual assault, illegal drugs, and indecency. Raquel asked him if he knew anything about Berlin, but he told them that he had no information to provide. They played the good cop, bad cop routine. Angel showed him authority, but Raquel calmed him down. Berlin had no friends or family that he mentioned while in prison. The prisoner could only give one piece of information, but he wanted something in exchange. Raquel made a deal; she had two conditions. If the information was good enough, she would reveal the second condition before she requested for his parole.

[00:35:50] The prisoner agreed and told them about retroxil, the drug that Berlin was injecting himself with. It was smuggled in prison through an inmate’s anal cavity. Raquel gave him the second condition; he needed to undergo castration. The prisoner refused, and Raquel won. She instructed Angel to go find everything that he could on retroxil and any unusual order patterns within the last six months. She told him that he could only go alone as they couldn’t trust anyone until they found the mole.

[00:37:10] Raquel confronted Nikolai, the caretaker of the scrap yard. She asked for his help to identify the man who had come earlier. Nikolai obliged. Back inside the bank, the hostage that requested to speak to Berlin in private was the teacher of Silvia. She’s requesting that Silvia be brought back with the rest of the group so that she would feel safer. Berlin changed the topic; he asked the teacher what subjects she was teaching. She answered that she taught philosophy, ethics, religious history, and workshops that included the environment as well as sexual education. Berlin told her that he had a problem with his sexuality and wanted her opinion.

[00:40:30] Berlin told her that it was based on a joke, and they discussed it further. The teacher asked for Sylvia once again, and so Berlin showed her. Sylvia was tied up in the other room. The teacher didn’t know what to do. She slowly stepped back and tried to reach for the scissors on the desk, but just as she was about to grab them, Nairobi stepped in. Berlin closed the blinds and asked her what was wrong. She told him that he was on television. Berlin ordered Oslo to take the teacher back to the group, and he proceeded to check the television.

[00:42:00] Nikolai was sitting with a sketch artist. Raquel approached Almansa to confirm if the details given by Nikolai matched the details he saw on the homeless man. He confirmed and stated that they would have his face soon. The Professor left his hideout; he was going somewhere.
