Money Heist Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

[00:00:10] Denver held Monica at gunpoint. He instructed her to get on her knees. She continued to beg for her life, but he still shot her. The sound of the shot echoed across the bank, the other hostages heard it, and they began to panic. It seemed that Denver had already killed Monica, but that wasn’t the case. Denver’s shot missed and hit the floor. Monica was thankful to be alive. She thanked Denver, but he still had another problem. Everyone heard the gunshot; hence they assumed someone had died. If he’s unable to produce evidence that he killed Monica, Berlin will definitely kill him instead.

[00:01:50] Monica offered Denver a deal; she wanted him to shoot her in the hand just to create enough blood as evidence. He told her it wouldn’t work. She then offered her thigh; she told him that she would hide inside vault number 2 and that he could just tell them that he disposed of her body. Denver agreed and shot her thigh. Berlin heard the second gunshot and became suspicious.

[00:03:00] He muffled her cries just before Berlin arrived. Denver made it look like Monica was dead; there was enough blood to make anyone believe that he had killed her. Berlin asked him why he heard two gunshots. He told Berlin that it was difficult to kill Monica because she was begging for her life. Berlin instructed him to put her body inside the coal furnace below the bank and to clean up the mess he made inside the bathroom. Berlin left afterward.

[00:04:50] Raquel’s mother was panicking as she checked multiple sticky notes that were all over her house. She seemed to have short-term memory. She shouted at the top of her lungs, looking for her granddaughter, Paula. She opened her closet, and we could see that it was covered in stick notes. We can assume that the yellow-colored notes are normal messages while the red ones are important messages. Some of the notes were shown, and it had something to do with Paula’s father. Raquel has a restraining order against him, and she shouldn’t allow Paula to go with his father. It was at this moment that she realized something had gone wrong.

[00:06:00]  The Professor received a phone call from Raquel. He answered, and Raquel told him that the hour was already up, but he didn’t take her seriously. He asked her what kind of games she played during recess when she was a child. The Professor continued to toy with her; Raquel told him that she played hopscotch, jump rope, and the likes. The Professor told Raquel that he played cops and robbers, but he didn’t remember anyone surrendering before they were caught. Raquel reminded him that children weren’t facing prison time for 16 years, but he assured her that their plan involved 0 years in prison. Meanwhile, Raquel’s mother is trying to call her as she has an emergency, but she can only reach her voicemail.

[00:07:30] Raquel asked The Professor what his plans were; she told him that a lot of people are suffering because of what they are doing. He responded with a list of demands: A 3 axle truck that can hold 18 tons, two propane tankers, and the ship named Malaika with flags of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Raquel tried to reason with him; she told him that it wouldn’t be easy to get his demands, but The Professor replied with a scenario. He told Raquel that if a building collapsed and 67 people inside were trapped, she would do everything in her power to save those people. If she gets him the demands, no harm will come to the 67 hostages inside the bank.

[00:08:30] While they were talking, Raquel’s mother called The Professor’s phone; he saw his phone was ringing and chose to end his conversation with Raquel. He picked up the phone and answered the call, Raquel’s mother introduced herself and told him she had an emergency, but she could not reach Raquel.

[00:09:20] Colonel Prieto informed Raquel that they would provide the truck to lure the robbers into the open so that they would have a better chance to take them down, but she disagreed, saying that the robbers would not come out of the bank. She told him that their plan was to get trapped in the bank so that they could print their own money. She knew that everything they were doing was planned and that they were still in control of the situation as of that moment.

[00:10:20] Denver carries Monica to vault 2. She presses her finger into the security lock and inputs a password. Denver opens the vault, and it has stacks of money inside and other banknotes. Outside the bank, The Professor approached the command center; he told the police officer that he had an urgent call for Raquel. They allow him through, and he enters the command center escorted by Almansa. He tells Raquel the situation and hands her his phone. Her mother told Raquel that Paula had gone with her father, and they hadn’t returned. Everyone inside the command center heard their conversation as they were recording the call. Angel tries to turn off the recording, but the staff told him that they were not able to do so. She rushed to a police car and drove off. The Professor carefully studies the command center before they escort him out.

[00:13:15] Berlin explains to the hostages that the gunshots that they heard were caused by a situation with the police. He told them that they experienced the situation because a hostage tried to call the police using the black phone, which he showed the other hostages. He asked the hostages if they knew who owned the phone because they had already confiscated Monica’s phone along with all the other phones, but before he could get an answer, Tokyo interfered. Berlin dragged her out of the room, and they had a meeting elsewhere. Nairobi, Rio, and Tokyo told Berlin that The Professor wanted no casualties, but he insisted that they needed to have a change in how they control their hostages.

[00:14:50] Tokyo confronted Berlin, she asked him if The Professor knew what he did, but he didn’t respond. Rio rushed for the phone and tried to call The Professor, but Berlin stopped him. Tokyo intervened and told Rio to call The Professor again. Rio dialed the phone, but The Professor didn’t answer. Berlin told them that it didn’t matter that they killed a hostage; they would be long gone before they realized that one hostage was missing, but they couldn’t feel at ease. Rio tried to call again, but no one answered. Berlin told them that this was why he was in charge inside the bank; no one could monitor everything going on for 24 hours.

[00:16:00] Moscow entered the room and asked what was going on. He could hear them arguing from outside and wanted to know what the problem was. Tokyo told him that Berlin ordered the execution of a hostage. Moscow was shocked, he asked them who executed the hostage, and Tokyo responded to tell him that Denver did it.  He turned around with a grim look on his face and left the room. Moscow shared a special relationship with his son. They did heists together. They were close to each other. Moscow knew that there was no going back if Denver killed a hostage. He could no longer save his son from the consequences of his actions.

[00:20:50] Berlin followed Moscow to stop him from entering the bathroom. Berlin pointed his gun at him, but Moscow wasn’t fazed. He went up to Berlin and asked him if he would shoot him, if he would shoot everyone else and end up alone inside the bank. Berlin couldn’t respond, and Moscow proceeded to enter the bathroom. As he opened the door, he saw Denver cleaning up. He saw the blood-stained floor and asked him if he really killed Monica; Denver replied that he did. Moscow couldn’t breathe; he slumped to the floor as Denver asked him if he had a heart attack. Berlin told Denver that it was an anxiety attack; they laid him down on the floor.

[00:22:50] All of the hostages were in shock. Arturo approached Rio and asked him if anyone was hurt. Rio told him to calm down. He assured everyone that no one was hurt. He clarified that the gunshots they heard earlier were to avoid a police raid. One of the hostages spoke to the other hostages and calmed them down. She assured them that nothing bad would happen to them.

[00:23:30]  Raquel arrived at her house. Her mother was there waiting for her. She apologized for what happened. She heard laughter inside their kitchen; it was Paula and her father. Paula told her that they had gone to the amusement park. Raquel told her mother to accompany Paula to put away her teddy bear. She then confronted her ex-husband and told him to face the wall as he broke the restraining order, but he just left. Raquel received a call from The Professor; he told her that he was calling from the café as she still had his phone.

[00:25:05] Moscow woke up; Denver asked him how he felt, to which he replied, telling him he was cold. He asked Nairobi to bring him a blanket along with something sweet. He told Denver that he didn’t know what had happened to him. He blamed his decision to dig the tunnel all morning. Nairobi arrived with the blanket, and they told him to just rest. Moscow reminisced of a moment with Denver in the countryside. He told him what his real reason was for leaving the mine and becoming a thief. Moscow was claustrophobic. Ironically, he was sent to prison for stealing. Denver told him that they were going to buy an island so that he could sleep among the palm trees. Back in the present time, they let Moscow rest and proceeded with their assigned tasks.

[00:29:00] Raquel met with The Professor inside the café. He asked her if everything was okay with her daughter. She responded that everything was fine, but in reality, nothing was fine; everything was awful. Raquel told The Professor what happened with her daughter and her ex-husband. Back in the bank, Denver went to visit Monica inside the vault. He brought supplies to fix her tourniquet and treat her wound. Denver assisted Monica in taking off her overalls. He was supposed to remove the bullet using a box cutter, but Monica disagreed. So he just cleaned up the wound and covered it with gauze and duct tape.

[00:33:30] Moscow had a nightmare. He dreamt of how Denver killed Monica. He got up and pulled his pistol and left it on the couch. Denver brought Monica antibiotics, pain relievers, and muscle relaxants. Monica was worried that the medicine would harm her baby. Denver read the pamphlets that came with the box. He wanted to find out whether they were safe to be taken during pregnancy. Just as he was reading the text, Oslo arrived outside the vault. He was going to light up his cigarette when he leaned on the vault door. Denver thought someone was going to enter the vault, but Oslo just walked away.

[00:36:00] Tokyo was collecting trash from the hostages, but Alison refused to throw her cup away. She then approached Rio asking if he had any more noodles, and he responded, stating that he only had rice left. Alison told him that it was okay. She threw her cup inside Rio’s trash bag. Moscow went downstairs and proceeded to the front gate. Helsinki tried to stop him, but he was too late. Moscow opened the front gate. He was preparing to leave when Denver tackled him.

[00:37:00] The police were waiting for them outside; snipers awaited orders to fire or not. Angel told them not to shoot as Tokyo headed for the controls to close the door. Moscow begged Denver to let him out; he wanted to leave the bank so that he could take the blame for what Denver did. Moscow told him that if it weren’t for him, he wouldn’t be inside the bank, and he wouldn’t have killed Monica. Denver told him that he didn’t kill Monica. He told Moscow that she was hiding.

[00:39:50] Raquel continued to tell her story to The Professor. They got divorced because she was a battered wife. She didn’t report her ex-husband as she didn’t have the courage to do it. Raquel only reported him when he started dating her sister so that she wouldn’t experience what happened to her, but no one believed her. She just seemed jealous and crazy. The Professor offered to help her, but he didn’t know how. She thanked him for his offer, and Angel arrived. He told Raquel about what happened earlier at the mint, and she immediately went back to the command center. The Professor also left the café to get back to his team.

[00:43:00] Denver has all the hostages lined up inside the staircase going to the roof. He told them that there was no threat and that they were just going out for some fresh air. Arturo didn’t believe him and told Pablo that they would become bait as the robbers exit through another door. Denver was furious at Arturo. He explained that one of them had an anxiety attack and that they needed to go to the roof for fresh air. Arturo thought that the reason for the anxiety attack was the gunshots earlier. He asked Denver who they shot. Denver had had enough of Arturo; he asked him to raise his left hand as he put his gun into his mouth, but Moscow was there to stop him.

[00:46:00] A sniper reported to the command center that the hostages were moving on the roof. Everyone was dressed the same, so they didn’t know if they were hostages or robbers. Denver and Moscow were having a conversation about Monica, but Arturo was eavesdropping. The Professor arrived in his hideout and called Berlin to ask what was going on. He told him that Moscow needed some air, so they took the hostages with him; he informed him that he didn’t agree with that decision, but he had no choice as Rio and Tokyo held him at gunpoint. The Professor told him to keep him updated as he listened on the radio for updates from the police. Moscow wanted Denver to tell the truth, and he did; he told him what happened and how Berlin instructed him to kill Monica, but he didn’t.

[00:48:00] Arturo panicked when he heard their conversation; he thought they killed Monica. He started pointing the gun at them, which caused the police to panic as well. The snipers updated the command center about what was happening. Denver and Moscow alerted everyone to the snipers, and they all kneeled. Arturo became the primary target as everyone thought he was one of the robbers. With all the pressure on her shoulders, Raquel ordered the snipers to open fire. They shot Arturo in the shoulder, and he fell to the ground. Once the snipers got a glimpse of his face, Angel confirmed that he was the manager of the bank, and they ceased fire.
