Middle-earth is coming back this September for Amazon Prime Video, but WB is going to be giving us an animated prequel in theaters with The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim. What’s great is, we’re actually going to get the return of someone from the original Peter Jackson movies.
Deadline reports that Miranda Otto will be reprising the role of Eowyn for War of the Rohirrim. Since this film is a prequel, Eowyn won’t have an active role in the story, but she will play the part of the narrator—which tracks with the lore of Rohan since they don’t write down history but rather they pass it down as songs/stories.
Besides Otto, the film also includes the voices of Gaia Wise and Brian Cox—who will be voicing the part of Helm Hammerhand, the king who built up the Helm’s Deep stronghold that we see in The Two Towers.
Here’s the story description:
The anime feature, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg – a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Hera, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.
Though The Hobbit trilogy may have stumbled on the landing, there’s still a lot of Middle-earth that we can explore. With the release date for the film so far though, I think we’ll have to wait until late 2023 to get our first look at War of the Rohirrim.
The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim comes to theaters on April 12, 2024.
