During the press conference after the awarding ceremony, a reporter asks Shin if he knows Tatsuyuki Michima. Then, reporters gather in front of Shin’s house, trying to get an interview with him. They also keep on calling the phone but no one answers. Reporters see Midori coming home from school and try to get an interview with her. Midori refuses and runs inside the house. Before she can even close the door, two reporters run to try to get inside. Minami appears and throws a chair at the two reporters.
The fax machine keeps on beeping and shows messages like “Go to hell!” and “Murdering Author!”
Only four women are at home: Midori, Hitomi, Yuki, and Minami. Shin is at the Comfort Club again with Hotaru. Hotaru asks him if he’s ever been deeply in love. Shin admits to himself that maybe he will never be deeply in love with someone. He remembers the girlfriend he had five years ago. He had been dating her since high school, but after Shin’s father committed the crime, his girlfriend left him without saying a word.
Ms. Miura approaches Mr. Sakurai and asks if he could help set up a meeting with Yuzu and Nanaka. Mr. Sakurai says he will take care of it. He checks the book sales ranking and sees that Shin’s novel is number one while Yuzu’s book is number 4. He admits he didn’t think Yuzu sees them as a rival.
Nanaka asks Shin out on a date. Shin reminds her of the rules, but Nanaka says rules are meant to be broken. The four other women still wait for Shin to come home because they believe they should follow the rule that they should have dinner together.
While Shin drinks with Nanaka, the four other women eat dinner together. Nanaka says Shin’s novel is selling a lot of copies. Shin looks sad and says his book sells not because it is interesting but because it is a hot topic at the moment. Nanaka says Shin’s book is interesting. In fact, she has read all of Shin’s novels.
Nanaka shares that when she was young, acting made her happy, but as she grows older it became uninteresting. Nanaka asks Shin for a favor: if his book, Drifting Emotions, becomes a movie, she should play the leading role. Shin promises to let Nanaka have the role.
After drinking, Shin throws up and Nanaka hands her a handkerchief. When she sees that Shin didn’t wipe his lips properly, Nanaka steals a kiss from him. Someone takes photos of them from a distance, and a magazine cover is released with the headline, “Nanaka’s Scandal! Daring kiss with the popular novelist!”
Inside her room, Nanaka reads the magazine and smiles. Mr. Sakurai, who sits across Nanaka thanks her and apologizes for such a difficult request. He also thanks Nanaka that Shin has sold over 600 thousand copies because of her.
Mr. Sakurai admits he feels uncomfortable in Nanaka’s room — there isn’t a single bed. Nanaka reveals that her hobby is collecting chairs. Since she was a kid, she used to sleep in a chair when she needed to work at different locations. So even as an adult, she still sleeps in a chair. Before leaving, Mr. Sakurai asks for one more favor from Nanaka.
While Hitomi is doing yoga, Shin stares at her. When Hitomi asks Shin if he is interested in yoga, Shin says he is just wondering if he would fall in love with Hitomi if he stares at her long enough. Hitomi gets hopeful. She smiles and asks Shin if he has finally fallen in love with her. Shin says not yet. Hitomi walks to Shin and gives him a headbutt before walking out of the room.
That night, Nanaka meets with Yuzu Hanaki. Yuzu insults Shin’s work and calls it complete rubbish. Nanaka says she also read Yuzu’s novel — not interesting. The story was pointless, even unbearable. She asks Yuzu if he really loves novels. Yuzu says yes, but Nanaka points out that Yuzu just loves the novels he writes.
Nanaka calls Shin and tells him she is coming home soon.
The next day Minami comes home and peeks through Nanaka’s open door. She goes to the living room, wakes Shin up, and tells him to wake everyone else. They all go to Nanaka’s room and see her sitting on a chair, lifeless, with blood on her clothes.
The fax machine shows a message again: “The true atonement begins now.”
Our Thoughts
It seems like Mr. Sakurai asks a lot of favors from Nanaka. His belief in Shin looks like an obsession he can’t get over. After Shin’s novel won an award, the reporters found out about his father, then Nanaka died not long after. We can’t say if the house is filled with bad luck or if Shin himself carries the bad luck. We feel sorry for Nanaka. Among the five women, she smiles the most. Though some people think she’s stupid, her last conversation with Yuzu showed that she is a smart woman. We don’t know the reason for her death yet, but we remember that Nanaka said before that she knew who sent the invitations.
