The Shrek franchise had ended back in 2010 with DreamWorks pivoting to focus on Puss in Boots, but after the teaser from The Last Wish, it looks like we’re going to be meeting everyone’s favorite grumpy ogre again soon.
In an interview with Variety, Chris Meledandri, a creative partner at DreamWorks (and head at Illumination Entertainment) has confirmed that a fifth Shrek film is in the works, and what’s more, they’re in talks with original cast members Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) to return.
“It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with ‘Mario,’ where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honor those core elements…,” says Meledandri about the project, “And then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that.”
We don’t know where Shrek 5 could go yet, but the films have certainly taken Shrek through several arcs, from Shrek finding his own family, to dealing with marriage and in-laws, to having kids. There’s probably several other ways for the story to go for Shrek, but I think dealing with death could be something off the table, since that was already something tackled in the last Puss in Boots film.
For now, all fans can really do is wait. If they are bringing Shrek back, I just hope they manage to capture the same kind of magic that Shrek 2 was able to provide.
