With Miguel Sapochnik being behind some of the best episodes of Game of Thrones, a lot of fans were excited to have him at the helm of spinoff House of the Dragon. As it turns out, he won’t be staying long.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sapochnik has now opted to leave the newly launched series. He says in a statement:
“Working within the Thrones universe for the past few years has been an honor and a privilege, especially spending the last two with the amazing cast and crew of House of the Dragon… I am so proud of what we accomplished with season one and overjoyed by the enthusiastic reaction of our viewers. It was incredibly tough to decide to move on, but I know that it is the right choice for me, personally and professionally.”
With Sapochnik leaving, HOTD co-creator Ryan Condal will now serve as the sole showrunner of the series. That being said, Condal will continue to ‘work closely’ with Thrones author George R.R. Martin.
It’s also worth mentioning that the series has brought back Game of Thrones veteran (and Thor: The Dark World director) Alan Taylor to serve as an executive producer of the series. He’s also set to helm multiple episodes for the second season.
Though I’m sure a lot of fans will be concerned with Sapochnik gone, I think the series is still in good hands. As long as the writing and character work is stellar, I think HOTD has nothing to worry about.
Catch House of the Dragon Sunday nights on HBO Max.
