Michael Fassbender Stars in Trailer for Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins

Thor: Love & Thunder may have been met with divisive reviews, but Taika Waititi is set to come back to form with his next film Next Goal Wins starring Michael Fassbender. The film is set to come out this October, and we finally have our first trailer.

Check this out:

The official description reads:

Directed by Academy Award Winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok), NEXT GOAL WINS follows the American Samoa soccer team, infamous for their brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001. With the World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around in this heartfelt underdog comedy.

The movie is actually based on a true story, about how Rongen was able to take his scrappy team of underdogs and train them to be competent players. There was actually a documentary that was released back in 2014 with the very same name:

No doubt, the film will probably dramatize events from the actual story to either make them more comedic or dramatic. Either way, I always thought that Waititi was best when he was working on a slice-of-life story, as compared to his Thor films which always felt like the humor was just improv off the top of everyone’s head.

The film looks like an absolute blast, and is exactly the kind of project I want from Waititi. I’m kind of hoping his priest character in this one is the same as the one he plays in Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Next Goal Wins is expected to come out on Oct. 20.
