Melissa McCarthy had something really good going for her Sean Spicer impression after all.
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards might not be as well-known as its primetime counterpart, but the two-night award ceremony still went on to highlight the best creative talent in on and off screen television—especially behind the scenes work. The award giving body focuses on giving out recognitions to all those working off camera, mainly makeup and costume, production, sound design, and also some major awards for guest stars as well.
Melissa McCarthy as former press secretary Sean Spicer Bags an Emmy Award
On Sunday, one of the funniest spoofs ever seen during “Saturday Night Live” garnered a notable recognition—the Best Guest Actress Award which went to Melissa McCarthy. The actress definitely nailed her Sean Spicer spoof as the former press secretary. An Emmy in itself is prestigious and great, but the McCarthy’s real reward was knowing that she pissed off Donald Trump because of her impression.
McCarthy was not present during the awards ceremony. Earlier this year, however, McCarthy admitted that she felt nervous the first time she came to Studio 8H as Sean Spicer. “But when I read the script, I was like, ‘Oh, God, that is juicy, but I don’t understand how we’re going to physically make it work.’ To which the amazing special effects person at SNL was like, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s not that big of a deal. That’s gonna take me, like, 15 minutes.’ I was like, ‘Hey!’” McCarthy told The Hollywood Reporter.
The actress played Spicer four times during the latest season of “Saturday Night Live.” These included scenes of the former press secretary hiding in bushes and riding a motorized podium while terrorizing citizens. Spicer himself called this impression by McCarthy “cute.” The former press secretary will be making his first appearance after his White House tenure on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on September 13.
“Saturday Night Live” also won a total of five awards for their Trump-centric latest season. One of them was Dave Chapelle, who took home the award for Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series after the controversial “SNL” episode he hosted during the 2016 US Presidential Elections.
