Former buddies and music collaborators, Matthew Koma (Matthew Bair) and Zedd (Anton Zaslavski), are involved in an ongoing feud on Instagram. The feud was started by Koma on Wednesday, June 5th, when he shared his personal opinions on working with the award-winning DJ and Producer.
Matthew Koma Speaks Out
The singer, who helped launch the 29-year-old Russian-German’s career is now speaking in response to years of ‘“What happened between you and Zedd” questions. Singer, songwriter, and producer Matthew Koma has had enough and posted a lengthy rant on Instagram calling out Zedd. ‘Spectrum’ was released on June 4, 2012, and served as Zedd’s first single in his debut studio album Clarity. The song features Matthew Koma and was also written by him and Zedd. After their collaboration on their hit songs, Koma was never of heard since—until now.
Koma’s post on Instagram reads, “It’s a really sad truth because I’m extremely proud of the work he and I did together … unfortunately, my good feelings toward those songs have all but disappeared as they were experienced alongside someone so toxic and self-serving that it occupied the space where any happiness could exist …. S***ty people suck and when they’re successful, people are afraid to blow the whistle.”
He goes on to say that they were both equal when they first started working together. The duo’s first two singles became a massive hit but there was already trouble in paradise. Issues started arising when Zedd’s alleged poor behavior started showing, including him taking all the credit for some of the songs they worked on together. Koma shared that he wrote every word and melody but was just brushed off, alleging that it took years for him to get paid.
Hilary Duff, Koma’s fiancée, also commented on his openness. “This is so important for people who love music to know. Writers are taken advantage of, ignored, and mistreated. Proud of you finally speaking up,” Duff says. The couple also shares a daughter together. Singer and songwriter Bebe Rexha also showed her support by commenting on Koma’s Instagram post, “The unfortunate dark side of the music business.”
Koma’s Final Statement
Wrapping up the length rant, Koma said, “But for those always wondering why there was never more music from the two of us, it wasn’t really my choice. Now, he has plenty of people to write his songs and produce his tracks and help him continue on his trajectory. But I [would] rather work at Starbucks and clean the toilets than ever experience that abusive dynamic again. Toxicity doesn’t breed happiness.”
Zedd has yet to comment regarding the issue.
