After being busy promoting his latest film, “War for the Planet of the Apes,” Director Matt Reeves is now preparing to work on “The Batman.” However, it looks like Reeves is starting from the ground up in terms of screenplay and other elements of the production. Due to “Apes” hitting theaters this weekend, the director hasn;t had enough time to work on his Batman solo film, partly because he wasn’t officially on board for the project until a few months ago.
Ben Affleck was initially attached to write alongside DC Head Honcho Geoff Johns), star and direct “The Batman.” However, in January of this year, Affleck stepped down from the helm and left the position open for Reeves. He’s still starring in the solo movie, but now it looks like the story that he co-wrote with Johns will not be used by Reeves. This was a rumor that’s been going on since March of this year, and now it might just turn out to be true.
Matt Reeves On New Story For ‘The Batman’
In an interview with MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz asked the director if he was going to work on the original story written by Affleck and Johns. “No,” Reeves replied. “It’s a new story. It’s just starting again. I’m excited about it. I think it’s going to be really cool.” While this comes as a confirmation of Reeves working with a blank slate, fan’s can’t help but wonder whether Joe Manganiello will still be appearing as Deathstroke, the movie’s main villain. Though no comment was made, Reeves has previously stated that he will be going back to the Dark Knight’s detective version, with a more noir take for “The Batman.”
Reeves also went on to talk about his meeting with Warner Bros. about “The Batman.” He said that he needed a break after working on “War for the Planet of the Apes” for almost three years. That being said, production for “The Batman” will surely not happen within the year or two.
