Mater is Speed in New Clip from Cars on the Road

We may not be getting a Cars movie from Pixar again anytime soon, but we are getting a miniseries featuring the franchise’s best friends—Lightning McQueen and Mater. Cars on the Road premieres this week, and we have a new clip that has Mater with some special enhancements.

For context, the series is supposed to be a semi-serialized anthology with Mater and Lightning going on a road trip; along the way, they run into several hijinks, with each exploring their own genre of story. It could be Mater getting upgrades now, but there’s also an episode with a haunted house full of ghost cars and a Mad Max-esque episode that has Lightning and Mater sporting their best Thunderdome makeovers.

Series director Steve Purcell says about the show:

 “The series is a romp across the country with Lightning McQueen and Mater… Like any real road trip, every day is a new mini-adventure with unexpected twists and turns.”

With Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy coming back to reprise their roles, I wonder who else they could bring back for the series. While the citizens of Radiator Springs have always come back, I’m hoping there’s an appearance from Cars 3’s Cruz Ramirez, who has been built up to be Lightning’s protégé. I tell you, if she isn’t the lead of the next Cars movie, I’m going to be pretty disappointed at Pixar.

Cars on the Road is set to premiere on Disney+ this Sept. 8.
