Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger returns from the Darkforce with unsettling discoveries. Finally, one emerges from the realm as a united persona. Meanwhile, the iconic duo has firsthand experience of fighting side-by-side in a video game-like setting. Now, however, the trio returns to reality. The man behind the prostitution and drug trafficking remain at large, and the trio must find him before he becomes a God.
On Thursday night’s episode of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) enter Lia’s (Dilshad Vadsaria) mind. As Tandy and Brigid O’Reilly (Emma Lahana) search for Andre Deschaine (Brooklyn McLinn), Tyrone resorts to questionable methods of clearing New Orleans’ streets. While these things happen, Andre makes an unstoppable ascent to power.
Gang Leaders
Tyrone’s time in the streets changed him. It made him wiser, stronger, and more in control of his powers. Before teaming up with Tandy once more, Tyrone spent his time learning about the gangs. At this point, he likely memorized their territories, hangouts, as well as their overall structure. With that said, seeing him take down both gangs with relative ease made perfect sense. One did not expect, however, Tyrone’s unconventional methods of interrogation. The show usually portrayed their heroes like the ‘light side’ ones (besides Brigid), so Tyrone going harsh on the gang leaders was a refreshing take on his character. Unlike Tandy, Tyrone does not usually break the rules, so it is fitting that he finally change his crime-fighting approach.
The First Victim
Andre’s first victim was Lia, who was a nurse at the time. Sadly, Andre discovered his capabilities through her. Much like Andre, Lia was musically inclined, playing the violin at a young age. Realizing what can be done to save Lia, Tandy borrows the violin from the younger Lia in the hopes of saving Lia by literally bringing her dream back. Unfortunately, Andre caught up to them as fast as the speed of light, surprising both Tyrone and Tandy. Andre preyed on vulnerabilities of hurt women, such as Tandy and Lia. Because of this, Tandy felt terrible when she considered killing Lia, so Brigid took matters into her own hands. Brigid’s complex new character is likely to cause more troubling scenes such as that. Hopefully, Tandy manages to keep her in check, preferably better than she did in this episode.
The New God
The show’s new, intriguing antagonist poses a strange, yet a more significant threat to the heroes, let alone to their world. Also, the writers decided to reveal his back story at the last minute, where most of the viewers wonder about who Andre is and why he does such things. Perhaps due to the theme revolving around tragedy, the introduction of Andre’s backstory began with his final moment as a musician. He successfully hit what is known as a “Blue Note,” a music note so high that few people can play and sustain it.
As soon as Andre does play the part, he experiences a staggering migraine, ending his (and his band’s) performance bitterly. Andre is another victim of misfortune, a man with nowhere else to go and no one to turn to, hence his decision to kill himself. It was as if fate played with him when the Roxxon oil rig explosion happens, causing him to lose focus and balance as he stood on a window pane. Fate also brought him to Lia, marking the beginning of his hope-stealing spree.
The final act of the episode takes the trio to an eerie scene. Andre’s victims, including Tandy’s mom, Melissa Bowen (Andrea Roth) hummed the tune Andre played. Tyrone and Tandy’s desperate attempt to stop him was both excellently choreographed and well edited. Lastly, their close victory-turned escape builds up the anticipation for the finale.
‘Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger’ Season 2, Episode 9 ‘Blue Note’ Final Verdict
As Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger‘s second season draws to a close, a significant improvement in terms of world-building, character development, as well as the plot itself, is evident. It brings forth elements from the comics presented in a way that is appealing to the audiences without being cheesy. Also, the characters’ growth, both in terms of power and personality, is spotless. The narrative that the show follows transitions from a schoolboy and a troubled girl to two young heroes, trying to make a difference in their young world.
As mentioned before, one of the most notable changes in the second season involves the antagonist. The seemingly impenetrable mind who now has the power of a voodoo God is an intriguing character. Hopefully, the final episode brings closure to some of the stories of these characters. However, one can infer that the antagonist does not merely ‘lose’ in the finale, given his newfound strength.
Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger continues Thursday, May 30th with ‘Level Up’ at 8/9c on Freeform.
