'Marvel's Cloak and Dagger' Season 2, Episode 8 'Two Player' Review: Sacrifice

A relationship, be it romantic, platonic, or affiliation, is never free of conflict. Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger manages to work through such things. After escaping from the clutches of a parasitic man, the duo finds themselves back in the Darkforce. However, the path is now different. The episode reveals how Voodoo and the Darkforce go hand-in-hand set in a troubled world.

On Thursday night’s episode of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, Evita Fusilier (Noëlle Renée Bercy) and Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) struggle to save Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) who lost himself in the Darkforce. Meanwhile, Adina Johnson (Gloria Reuben) seeks out Father Delgado (Jaime Zevallos) for help. As Auntie Chantelle (Angela Davis) hands over the mantle of Mambo, Andre Deschaine (Brooklyn McLinn) solves the missing link to unlocking his vèvè.

Successor

Auntie Chantelle’s transition to becoming one with their ancestors involved losing her physical form. Because of this, Evita must take Chantelle’s place as the Mambo, a voodoo priestess. Along with this responsibility came sacrifices, hence Evita accepting the fact that she cannot pursue her academic and professional dreams. The enormous burden of being the Mambo requires her to devote her life to service. Evita may be a minor character of the show, but the writers did not make it seem that way. Intertwining voodoo with the Darkforce places her part in the show plus the fact that she is Tyrone’s girlfriend. Or was Tyrone’s girlfriend, perhaps, given that she avoids contact with him after Tyrone and Tandy’s return.

Coexisting

Another exciting aspect of the show is Brigid O’Reilly’s (Emma Lahana) situation. When Brigid’s mopey counterpart roamed the earth, the aggressive half, Havoc, made sense of the Darkforce dimension. Of course, Havoc is a result of the second Roxxon explosion, but she has the same memories and skills as the real Brigid. Her survival in the Darkforce is an extraordinary feat since she not only survives, but she also figures out who Andre is and what he does. Finally having Havoc and Mopey Brigid is a given, obviously, but the question was always how it happens. Thankfully, the episode provides a proper plot for Brigid’s character, despite how little we know of the Darkforce dimension.

I Stay Where You Stay

Olivia Holt in Marvel's Cloak and Dagger Season 2 Episode 8

Alfonso Bresciani/Freeform

The show initially labeled Tandy and Tyrone’s dynamic as best friends, but this episode changes that. The previous season, as well as the current season, has moments where Tandy and Tyrone seem to look at each other as something more than best friends, and the show finally decides to make it happen or tease the viewers, at least. Their interactions in this episode scream CHEESY so much that even the guardian of the dead, Baron Samedi (Justin Sams) pouts his lips in agreement. It does suck that Tyrone and Evita’s relationship meet a rocky end, but Tyrone and Tandy is the Divine Pairing. Maybe Tyrone and Evita could have closure in the next episode. Also, Tandy returning home to scattered beer bottles and an empty medicine container imply that her mom overdosed, so now, the duo only has each other.

Confess

The plot that came utterly unexpected was when Adina kills Connors (J.D. Evermore). The events in the previous episode made it seem more likely for Connors to attempt to flee. However, once Adina confesses to Father Delgado, one could not help but feel sorry for Connors. The man spent eight months in a desolate place, haunted by his conscience after all. Also, Adina’s dialogues made it apparent that Connors is out of the picture. She never mentions him up until she confesses to Delgado. Indeed, a mother’s love can make the most morally upright person become vengeance incarnate, especially after losing a son, both literally and figuratively.

Evil’s Ascension

The show provides the heroes a formidable, well-written, and compelling opponent: Andre Deschaine. His introduction to the series had a sort of minor character feel, showing him as a mere mortal. When he finally revealed his true self, however, his real persona compensates for his seemingly uneventful introduction. Andre is cold-hearted, especially since he left Lia Dewan (Dilshad Vadsaria) for dead in this episode. Also, he is an intellectual, making it tough for the heroes to figure out a way to defeat him. The man hid in plain sight as he ran the crime operation in New Orleans, and now that he unlocked his real power, Tandy and Tyrone are in for a heck of a fight.

‘Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger’ Season 2, Episode 8 ‘Two Player’ Final Verdict

A lot of significant changes transpired in this episode of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger. Heroes fall, enemies rise, and relationships end. Also, the further presentation of the Darkforce Dimension gives the show the mythical superhero feel that it lacked in the previous season. So far, every move made in the show reveals how deeply rooted it is in the comics, which is a good thing. In the upcoming episode, it is safe to expect the mix of both real-life crime elements aided by an evil magical being.

Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger continues Thursday, May 23rd with ‘Blue Note’ at 8/7c on Freeform.
