A period in exile may be the thing to change one’s perspective. Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger deal with New Orleans’ problems. As one sets out to clear his name, the other goes after the sex trafficking ring. The risk accompanying a solo operation is considerable, and one learns this the hard way. Trapped in a state of delusion, she forcibly lives alternate versions of what her life could be.
On Thursday’s episode of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) lives through alternate versions of her life. In there, she sees the good and the bad depending on how things would have happened. Andre Deschaine (Brooklyn McLinn) eventually finds out Tandy’s weakness, taking all hope from her.
Picture Perfect
In her first vision, Tandy is proposing a toast to Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph), fresh off of graduation from the Police Academy. After the Roxxon explosion, Tyrone and Tandy both survive, and so does Nathan Bowen (Andy Dylan) and Billy Johnson (Marqus Clae) who end up finding them. Connors (J.D. Evermore) does not shoot Billy while Tyrone jumps in the water to save Tandy. Everything about that dream was perfect. Tyrone is now a Police Officer in the NOPD and Tandy and her family, now based in New York where she performs ballet live a comfortable life. They celebrated Tyrone’s graduation at his house with everyone they love present. When they head out to the store to buy ice, however, tensions raise between Tyrone and Tandy and the Store Clerk plus a catcaller, making their powers manifest.
Working for Roxxon
In yet another vision, Tandy finds herself wearing a Roxxon uniform. One of their engineers, Tandy was preparing to go to the rig to monitor the activity of what they mined there. Nathan left their family years ago, so Tandy and Melissa Bowen (Andrea Roth) live together. At work, no one took her seriously given her last name as well as the fact that she is a woman. Tandy finally meets Tyrone and Billy there, working for Roxxon as well. Mina Hess (Ally Maki) is the no-nonsense boss there who disliked Tandy for her last name. The rig, as expected, collapsed just as it did in real life. Tandy and Tyrone receive their powers, enabling her to save Mina. In real time, Andre increases the dosage of his drugs on Tandy, making her have a different vision.
Out on The Streets
Tandy’s third vision brings her to New Orleans’ less developed areas, hoping to meet her signature quota for a petition to save New Orleans’ Shorebirds. Tandy bumps into Liam Walsh (Carl Lundstedt) with his girlfriend, Mikayla (Cecilia Leal). As she convinced Liam to sign the petition, she swiftly took his wallet. Liam and the cops soon chase after Tandy until she finds Tyrone stealing a car. Without hesitation, Tandy enters the vehicle and orders Tyrone to drive. On the road, Tandy opens up to Tyrone until the cops chase after them. Once again, Tandy feels the effects of the increase of Andre’s drugs.
Hopeless
Cycling to the false memories, Tandy eventually makes her way to the record store in the Darkforce Dimension. Andre stood there, playing her records. He was determined to drain all hope from Tandy so that she would bend to his will. He even goes as far as narrating his suicide attempt on the night of the rig’s explosion which gave him the ability to create a drug that steals hope. When Tandy breaks the turntable using her dagger, she wakes up in the back of the ambulance that took her.
Tyrone breathes a sigh of relief as Tandy shows up in the church. Without any time to lose, Tandy tells him that they should go after the sex trafficking ring now that she knows who runs it. On the scene, Detective Brigid O’Reilly (Emma Lahana) tells Tandy and Tyrone that she brought back-up, so it is best for them to leave. Still, they knew better than to let the cops do the confrontation. Tyron and Tandy teleport to Andre’s office, finding him gathering his things.
Using Mikayla as a hostage, Lia (Dilshad Vadsaria) threatens to kill her if they did not let them get away. Tyrone quickly reacts as he took Mikayla away when Tandy hurled a light dagger towards Lia. WIth Lia down, Tandy and Tyrone stood face to face with Andre. Andre, on the other hand, seemed confident that things would go his way. Just as Tandy was sure that she has one person to herself, Tyrone, Andre shot and killed Tyrone in front of her. Things go slow from there. Andre’s staff unload Tandy from the ambulance as soon as she gives up hope, watching Tyrone bleed out. Much like Andre’s other victims’ minds, Tandy sat in a dark place hopeless.
‘Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger’ Season 2, Episode 6 ‘B Sides’ Final Verdict
The Roxxon explosion did not just affect Tandy and Tyrone; other people got hit by it as well. One of them is Andre, and Andre uses his abilities to his benefit. The strange thing about this is that Andre is also a user of the Darkforce, like Tyrone. However, based on what the episode revealed, he only uses a fraction of the Darkforce which is the record store. It will be interesting to see how a battle between two Darkforce users would play out, and we are likely to see such in the upcoming episodes. Despite this episode being slow-paced and a piece to a greater story, it gave more depth to the complexity of our heroes’ powers. It is not just a simple war on drugs type of story anymore. Instead, it involves things beyond explanation.
Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger continues Thursday, May 9th with Vikingtown Sound at 8/9c on Freeform.
