'Marvel's Cloak and Dagger' Season 1, Episode 6 'Funhouse Mirrors' Recap: Deceit

The Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger duo seems to have gathered enough information to put up a plan. While one of them disguises, the other becomes sneaky. Little do they know that a greater evil lies ahead. An eventual reunion between the two becomes inevitable. As the events unfold, one can tell how things would end, especially if you have an aunt who happens to practice voodoo.

In this week’s episode of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) pretends to be an intern at Roxxon to gather more information about her father. Meanwhile, Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) takes a dangerous path that would make him closer to Detective Connors (J.D. Evermore). At the same time, Detective Brigid O’Reilly (Emma Lahana) works with Connors to work on the drug trade case.

More Voodoo

Evita Fusilier’s (Noelle Renée Bercy) Aunt, Auntie Chantelle (Angela M. Davis) performs a Voodoo ritual on her, concerned about Tyrone’s future. At first, Evita thinks that the idea of Tyrone involved in the next disaster that would hit New Orleans was ridiculous. However, this changes as Auntie Chantelle’s cards reveal how his future would end.

Evita’s character has a more prominent role than most may realize. While she portrayed nothing more than a love interest to Tyrone, this changes almost immediately. Because of the first Voodoo episode Arc, Evita’s character role shifts into something new. As much as she still maintains her love interest role, she gains another one: Tyrone’s protector.

The Intern

Tandy pretends to be an intern in Roxxon to get closer to Mina Hess (Ally Maki), daughter of Ivan Hess (Tim Kang), the man who worked with her father on the oil rig that exploded. However, Mina Hess is no fool as she sees through Tandy’s cover. Tandy’s mistake was asking too many specific questions. Also, she subconsciously reveals so much information about herself. Still, Mina was kindhearted enough to let Tandy talk to her father, who happened to be injured by the blast as well. Tandy leaves with a new plan in mind.

Tandy’s wit and charisma are her best assets. Tandy uses these throughout the episodes. A glimpse at what her life could have been if she took a different path takes her off course. While she still manages to get what is needed, Tandy almost lost herself in her roleplaying. Mina’s character could prove to be a powerful ally to Tandy once she develops her full strategy against Roxxon and its cronies.

Drug Runner

Tyrone visits Duane Porter’s (Dalon J. Holland) workshop. He already knew that Duane was working with Connors, so he tries to get in the system. When one of Duane’s runners mess up, Tyrone uses the opportunity to try to take his place. Duane did not want Tyrone to be part of it, but since Tyrone insisted, he tells Tyrone that they would talk about it. Unfortunately, this would become their last conversation.

Tyrone’s innocence and will was intact. Ever since the loss of his brother, he wanted nothing else but to bring Connors to justice. Tyrone’s and Duane’s differences did not stop Tyrone from trying. Also, Duane’s reasons for lying show a tragic reality. It was easy to see that his decision would eventually become his downfall.

Drug Trade

Detective O’Reilly’s actions to try to take Connors down brings Connors himself working with her. This brings attention to her around the precinct, but she disregards this, despite Office Fuchs’ (Lane Miller) warnings. When Connors reaches the precinct, they track down dealers based on what Detective O’Reilly compiled. To cover up his tracks, Connors sets up Duane, one of his large-scale drug pushers. Tyrone, who was spying on them at the time, witnesses everything. He makes a run for it. As Connors shot at him, Tyrone uses his abilities to avoid the bullets. Tyrone ends up at the church where Tandy finds him, crying.

It sucks that their powers keep them from hugging. Now that the duo learned enough from their separate missions, perhaps it is time to work together to take down their opponents. It is only a matter of time before Auntie Chantelle’s prediction comes true.

Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger continues Thursday, July 12th, with “Lotus Eaters” at 8/9c on Freeform.
