The Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. team is set to return for one final spin around the block on May 27, 2020.
…Y’know just for old time’s sake. And to save the world from the threat of the Chronicoms and their dastardly plot to make Earth their new home.
And to possibly save Hydra.
Wait. What?
That’s right. While season’s six’s finale episode explained some details about the Chronicoms plans to infiltrate Earth’s past in order to establish it as their new home-world, Chronica-3, a new sneak peek clip and trailer combo give us a first look at how their goals will be achieved.
Shadowhunters fans will instantly recognise Luke Bains (aka Clary’s evil brother Jonathan) in fine and creepy form, literally face-stealing the identity of a 1930’s New York cop. Knowing the Chronicom’s ability to assume new skins whenever necessary, it makes sense that their plans may involve assuming the identities of key people throughout history.
However, it’s a brief conversation between Daisy and LMD Coulson (we’re definitely not hating on that idea) that raises the most eyebrows.
Daisy asks, “So you’re saying that to save S.H.I.E.L.D…” only for Coulson to finish her thought. “We have to save Hydra.”
It appears that the S.H.I.E.L.D. team’s efforts to save the future may hinge on their ability to alter the past — even if that means coming to the rescue of some of its least savoury elements. With a tagline for season 7 hinting “Change the past to rescue to the future” we know this is not going to be straightforward time-travel storyline.
There’s plenty to love in the quick glimpse of the season ahead including the upgraded Zephyr One, Coulson back as Coulson (goodbye Sarge, we hardly knew ya), some cool action sequences from Yoyo and Quake, and the gang in 1930’s Film Noir garb.
Per ABC — “This season Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are thrust backward in time and stranded in 1931 New York City. With the all-new Zephyr set to time-jump at any moment, the team must hurry to find out exactly what happened. If they fail, it would mean disaster for the past, present and future of the world.”
The series stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leopold Fitz, Henry Simmons as Director Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie, Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez and Jeff Ward as Deke Shaw.
The series was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who also serve as executive producers along with Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns Wednesday, May 27 (10:00 – 11:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC.
