Mark Hamill Lands Voice Acting Role for Chucky in 'Child's Play' Movie Reboot

After voicing numerous iconic cartoon characters and starring as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, actor Mark Hamill will make his foray into the horror realm in the upcoming reboot of the late ’80s slasher classic, Child’s Play.

Hamill will lend his voice as Chucky, which was previously done by Brad Dourif. The Star Wars actor joins Aubrey Plaza, Bryan Tee Henry, and Gabriel Bateman. The film is helmed by Polaroid’s Lars Klevberg, from a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith. Hamill’s casting comes as a TV show is also being developed for the Chucky franchise—one that’s being spearheaded by Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca.

Hamill shared the announcement during Wondercon via Twitter video, saying:

In a statement, producer David Katzenberg said, “We feel incredibly lucky to have an icon creating a new take on an iconic character. Mark is a gifted actor and celebrated vocal performer, and he’s approached this challenge with incredible energy and commitment.”

Child’s Play will have the same premise as the 1988 film. Plaza plays Karen, who buys her son Andy (Bateman) a mysterious doll for his birthday, not knowing that it cursed by the spirit of a notorious serial killer. But this one’s a bit more updated, though. It appears as if the doll has various tech enhancements on it—making it an even bigger threat than it was previously shown in the ’80s.

Child’s Play is set to hit theaters June 21, 2019. Watch the trailer below:
