Margot Robbie Teases Fans with Harley Quinn Spinoff 'Birds of Prey'

In an interview with Collider, Margot Robbie teased everyone about the upcoming Birds of Prey movie, a Suicide Squad spin-off featuring an all-girl Batman rogues gang, calling it an “R-rated girl gang film.”

“She’s got to be with other people; it should be a girl gang,” Robbie said, referencing her famous character portrayal of Harley Quinn. “I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.”

Birds of Prey revolves around a group of characters from the DCEU—both villains and heroes. With Robbie set to produce the film, she made it a priority not only to highlight “girl power” but also to put them in key positions behind the scenes as well. Christina Hodson was tapped to write the screenplay with Cathy Yan being the first Asian woman to direct a DC film.

That said, Robbie commented on the diversity of Birds of Prey, saying, “and then, of course, having a female director to tell that story. And giving a female director the chance to do big budget stuff. They always get ‘Here’s the tiny little film’… I was like, ‘I love action. I love action films. I’m a girl. What, are we meant to only like a specific thing’?”

Robbie also expressed how happy she was with Yan being the helmer of the film, “So it was hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible. But at the end of the day — male, female — the best director gets the job and Cathy was the best director.”

With fans also anticipating other Harley Quinn spin-offs, Robbie confirmed that she wasn’t going to be cast for those different versions. Robbie stressed out how focused she was with this new film. “I was always focused on this one with Christina,” she said. “I kept presenting it to the studio until they felt it was at a point where they were ready to do it. And now we’re all in.”

In another interview with Yahoo Movies, Robbie said that the film will not be concentrating on the comic-based main cast but will have a diverse selection of female talent. Characters such as Huntress, Hawkgirl, Catwoman, Black Canary, Poison Ivy, and Power Girl are all possible contenders to be included in Birds of Prey.

Birds of Prey started off in 2002 as a TV Series under Warner Bros. The show featured Black Canary, Oracle, and the Huntress as its main characters.
