Margot Robbie Confirms Harley Quinn Solo Movie in Development

Boy, does Harley Quinn get a lot of attention even a year after “Suicide Squad!” Following the recent announcement of a “Harley Quinn” animated series—which titular star Margot Robbie is also set to voice—the actress also confirmed that a “totally different” movie featuring the character is now in the works and completely separate from the previous announcement made by Warner Bros.
In the recent months, movies focused on Harley Quinn’s story were announced. For one thing, we have the upcoming “Gotham City Sirens,” to be helmed by “Suicide Squad’s” David Ayer. And then there’s the “Suicide Squad 2” sequel, which also features Robbie as Harley. There’s also news of a solo Joker and Harley Quinn film. Recently, an animated series was also announced. Talk about a full schedule for puddin’!

A female-centric Harley Quinn flick

In an interview with Josh Horowitz of MTV News, Robbie revealed that she’s been working on a solo Harley Quinn movie for the past two years—that’s ahead of her first appearance as the character in”Suicide Squad.” According to Robbie, the film will be made by the actress’ LuckyChap Entertainment production company. Her take would be a deeper exploration of her character, immensely differing from her “Suicide Squad” portrayal. “I’ve been working on a separate spin-off for Harley for a while now,” Robbie said. “I want to see her with other women. I kept saying it while we were filming Suicide Squad. I was like, ‘She needs her girlfriends.'”

A female-centric “Harley Quinn” movie? Sign us up. The rise of female-led films this year has proven to be a huge success, with “Wonder Woman” the highest-grossing summer flick of the year. It also proves that if female characters’ stories are given the right kind of treatment and directed by female directors, it has a high likelihood of being a critical and commercial success.
“I, honestly, don’t think anyone knows what’s going to be the next thing to happen, but I think everyone’s keen to get Harley back on screen,” Robbie added. “So everyone is working on lots of different versions of what that could be.”
