Two months later, Ben wakes up from a dream where Flight 828 explodes, killing him and everyone onboard. He sees his left hand glowing.
Saanvi is cleaning her desk in the lab when she receives a text from Ben. She decides to call him. Ben talks about his calling and his hands, admitting he feels the tailfin is inviting him.
He talks to Grace over the phone the following day to tell her about his dream, and he’ll see Vance later that day. Olive comes in and greets her mom. Grace asks if she is excited about her prom, but Olive will skip it. Grace convinces her daughter to go to the dance, but Olive has already decided.
Emmett drives Ben to Vance. He asks Emmett where they are going.
Ben and Saanvi are transported to the NSA’s new safe, concealed location. After chastising Ben for rejecting his plea not to try to help him when he was confined in Cuba, Vance shows them a recreated Flight 828, complete with the tailfin they discovered in Cuba.
“Welcome to Eureka,” Vance says.
Meanwhile, Michaela and Zeke try their best to care for Beverly. She‘s having breakfast, but she wants some raisins. She gets mad finding raisins; she thinks Michaela is hiding it. Zeke comes into the kitchen and sees a vision of himself in Beverly’s place.
Michaela explains Glen asked them to keep her company. After Beverly calms down, Zeke tells Michaela he felt Beverly‘s confusion. “That is next level,” Michaela says.
At the precinct, Jared is talking with Sarah about the missing case of her mother. He assures her he will do his best to find her mother. Before Sarah leaves, she mentions her mother always takes a stroll at the park if she has had a rough day.
Pete, Jace, and Kory get a new calling: they are running in the dark with a gigantic clock ticking down.
Kory vomits what he drinks.
Angelina is with Pete in jail, telling him she feels she was chosen to be with him and that the callings have the power to save him. He understandably is hesitant to believe her.
Vance is now in control of the NSA once more. He uses his position to take Ben and Saanvi around Eureka: Flight 828 testing/rebuilding facility. Ben insists on seeing the tailfin. He wants to know what is happening to his hand.
Michaela and Zeke are going outside when they hear a doorbell — Angelina. She begs them to assist Pete in his calling. Zeke and Michaela go to jail to see Pete. Zeke connects with him, sensing Pete’s anxiety and remorse. Pete tells them about his calling and says the giant clock is similar to the one at his high school football field. They were expelled from the team years ago.
Olive talks to Angelina about skipping prom. She is supposedly going with TJ, but TJ is not there. She then says that she will complete her mission related to Egyptian mythology. Angelina volunteers to assist.
Michaela and Zeke visit Pete’s high school football coach, Terry Hannity (Shaun O’Hagan), to learn what happened to him. Terry admits Pete gave narcotics to a boy who overdosed and died. As Michaela and Zeke walk away, they fail to notice Jace standing on the opposite side of the field, observing them.
Vance demonstrates the tailfin to Ben and Saanvi at the new Flight 828 hideout. He claims the tailfin’s condition is consistent with the fact that it has been submerged for seven years in saltwater. Ben thinks about why the tailfin disappeared as Zeke survived freezing on the lake. Saanvi suddenly remembers what happened to the Major.
Jared digs deeper and discovers a reported incident when the Major vanished at a park. Jared communicates with the officer who attended the incident and requests her notes be forwarded to his precinct. Drea gets coffee and says Jared‘s buying.
Back at the Flight 828 hideaway, Ben informs Vance about the three meth heads who survived the icy lake. Vance gets irritated that Ben did not inform him sooner. Ben thinks it is also related to the tailfin. Ben notices Saanvi thinking deeply. Saanvi assures him that she is okay.
Saanvi runs across Troy (Ed Herbstman), who she assumed was slain by the Major. He admits they forced him to recreate Saanvi‘s work at Eureka.
Vance leads Ben to the tailfin and touches it with his left hand, expecting something to happen. Nothing happens. “Lightning rarely strikes twice,” Vance says.
Michaela and Zeke return and talk to Pete about Derek Hanson. Zeke connects with Pete and asks, “Who are you so scared of? Who are you protecting?” He then convinces Pete the calling is his chance to change, so he needs to take it. Pete begins to weep and tells them he didn’t want to sell drugs, but Coach Hannity forced him to. Pete calls the guard.
Michaela is convinced the callings want her to arrest Coach Hannity.
Jace joins up with Kory. Jace plans to kill the coach. Kory, terrified, explains he keeps on seeing things, hearing voices, and puking water.
Saanvi is convincing Ben they can trust Vance. Suddenly, his hands glow up. He thinks it is reacting to something nearby. He sees a door — Deck Level A3. Ben‘s not permitted to go in there, but he gets Saanvi to stand in for him and slips in.
Olive and Angelina discover a mythological narrative about an underworld ruler who died but was resurrected by his wife. Olive continues glancing at photographs of her friends getting ready for prom as she’s studying.
Olive asks Angelina if she has a plan for that night. It turns out she is thinking of attending the prom.
Saanvi tells Vance the tailfin vanished while she let the Major die at the park. She now feels she will not survive the Death Date as a result. Vance accuses her of leaping to conclusions and invites her to join the team investigating the disappearance of Flight 828.
Ben’s hand takes him to the body of a lady who was a passenger on Flight 828. She died due to a gunshot wound, and her body is being preserved — Kelly Taylor. Ben questions Vance about it. Vance commands Dr. Gupta about the results: both Ms. Taylor and the tailfin exhibited evidence of being at the ocean’s bottom. Saanvi is doubtful of Ben’s belief that he and the other passengers have been revived.
Vance and Ben argue. “It‘s only a matter of time before those lab coats out there figure out whose handprint was glowing on that tailfin. They‘ll want to study you,” Vance tells Ben. Then he asks Ben, “How much are you willing to sacrifice to get to the truth?”
Angelina persuades Olive to attend her prom. She tells her to enjoy it and takes many photos of Olive.
Michaela and Drea visit Coach Hannity at home. They rush in upon hearing a scream. It‘s Kory; Jace shot him when Kory tried to stop him from shooting the coach. Michaela asks whether the coach has any drugs in the house. Kory tells Michaela to check the coach’s vent. She finds evidence and arrests the coach.
Michaela goes back to Beverly’s house and sees Zeke and Beverly are comfortable with each other.
Angelina, dressed beautifully, visits Pete in jail.
Michaela recounts the day’s events at Coach Hannity‘s house to Pete. As she leaves, Pete responds he believes he knows how she may find Jace.
While Ben continues to work on his Flight 828 link and resurrection idea at home, Saanvi chooses to join the study team.
Jared is at the park, still digging deep into Major Fitz’s case. Emmett is following him. Emmett phones Vance: “Vasquez is getting too close to the truth.”
Our Thoughts
This episode is remarkable not just because of the advances “Tailspin” achieves in terms of lore but also because it does not overlook its relationships.
Angelina is a fantastic addition to the ensemble, bringing another fresh voice to the program and acting like Olive’s sister.
The two ladies’ friendship gives the narrative a bit more depth than the previous season when it seemed like everyone was against her until she met TJ.
