‘Maleficent 2’ Begins Filming, Official Plot, Cast, and Photos Revealed

Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning reprise their roles as Maleficent and Princess Aurora, respectively, as they officially begin shooting Maleficent 2. The cast and crew of the film are in the UK where production is underway, Disney announced.

Fanning took to Instagram to show us what being on set looks like. She posted two cute behind-the-scenes photos of her and her co-star, Jolie, in bathrobes and sunglasses. The following picture was a serious selfie of Elle and Angelina in costume, lurking behind her with “Ultimate Photobomb #Maleficent2” as the caption.

New and old faces

Some of the other people returning are Sam Riley as Diaval, Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, and Juno Temple as the pixies Knotgrass, Flittle, and Thistlwit, respectively.

Brenton Thwaites, who played Prince Philip, won’t return to reprise his role. Harris Dickinson will be playing the royal in the second film. Deadpool’s Ed Skrein will also be joining the cast as the villain. Michelle Pfeiffer has also been confirmed as Queen Ingrith. Jolie’s Salt co-star Chiwetel Ejiofor will again work with her as a character whose name has not yet been disclosed. However, it is rumored that he’ll play a part in Maleficent’s love life.

Maleficent’s director, Robert Stromberg, is taking a step back and giving it to Joachim Rønning, co-director of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment of the Pirates franchise.

The screenwriter for the first film, Linda Woolverton, also came back to take charge of the script. She had help from Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster, who worked on Transparent. The official plot released is below, along with the first official photo from the set:

“A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after “Maleficent,” in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora, “Maleficent II” continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.”
