Continuing his long-standing partnership with Universal, director M. Night Shyamalan will be releasing two more films with the studio set to be released on February 26, 2021 and February 17, 2023, according to Deadline. As far as what these movies will be about, however, no one has a clue just as what you’d expect with a Shyamalan film.
Universal and Shyamalan have previously worked together on the director’s self-financed Split and Glass films. Split remained at No. 1 for three consecutive weekends after its debut in 2017 and grossed more than $278 million worldwide. Much like it, Glass also held the top spot for three weekends and made close to a hefty $250 million. All together with Unbreakable, the trilogy grossed a lucrative $625 million worldwide with a combined budget of $35 million.
M. Night Shyamalan Continues His Comeback Streak
In a statement released by Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer, he praised Shyamalan’s ability to keep the global audience yearning for more. “M. Night Shyamalan continues to create exciting, highly original stories that keep global audiences on the edge of their seats,” Cramer said. “There is no one like him. He is a master filmmaker working at the height of his powers, and we are honored that he has once again chosen Universal to be the home for his next two incredible projects.”
Shyamalan returned the compliments praising the studio’s mandate for original films. “There are wonderful studios out there, but Universal has made it a mandate to release original films. They are the best at finding an audience for new stories with unexpected tones,” the director said. “I believe original films are crucial to the longevity of the theatrical experience. I am so excited to be working with them again and bringing new stories to the movie screen for years to come.”
After Shymalan’s career took off with The Sixth Sense in 1999, the director was able to follow it up with a couple of modest hits like Signs and Unbreakable. However, since then, Shyamalan’s career has been on a rough ride of ups and downs. In 2015, the director made a successful comeback with The Visit, a documentary-style horror thriller film about two kids who discover dark and strange things in their unfamiliar grandparents’ house. The film grossed $100 million costing only $5 million to produce. It also paved the way for Shyamalan’s first partnership with Universal. Now, the director is waiting for the release of his new 10-episode psychological thriller series Servant on AppleTV+. Aside from executive producing the project, Shyamalan also directed two episodes of the series including the pilot.
