'Lucifer' Season 4 Review: A Devilish Comeback From the King of Hell

The King of Hell is back on Earth, and Netflix and the crew made sure that Lucifer’s new season goes over and beyond expectations after that almost year-long wait. More devil face, more celestials, more relationships, more nudity, more fun and of course more heartbreaking moments. That’s what Lucifer Season 4 is. It’s still the same old Lucifer but more! Netflix magic was surely there. Surprisingly, it managed to compress all that in mere ten episodes. Despite that, Lucifer delivered another wicked, unforgettable, and touching season. When your show nearly suffers an untimely death, THIS is how you make a comeback.

10 Episodes of Lucifer

Lucifer always had a lot of episodes to play with in its past three seasons but never just ten episodes. The least it ever had was 13. And this ultimately set the pace of the plot for season 4. And take note, season four is the response to the climax of season three. Without it, the show might as well be gone and forgotten.  That’s a whole load of the story right there. And to put it into ten episodes from a 24-episode buildup is an amazing feat.

Each episode is rich with story. And it’s like each and every one of them had an eye-popping revelation of their own. There’s no boring episode and no long wait for major plot developments. The downside is that with only ten episodes, the story is a little too compressed and maybe a little too rushed. It’s actually a bit jarring watching the first few episodes. And it takes some time to adjust to the fast pace of the season.

Though each episode is rich with developments, as a watcher, you’ll actually need some room to breathe and process. The past seasons have done excellent in that area. But, it’s an obvious season four has tried to do the same with the constraint they’ve been given. Nevertheless, when you get into the groove, it brings back the experience of watching the past seasons in a really great rollercoaster of emotions.

The Devil and His Friends

When Lucifer season three ended and FOX announced there won’t be a fourth season, fans were beyond devastated. They were left in the air after one of the best cliffhangers in the show. Luckily, season four picked up on the cliffhanger with ease. Though it’s not as high toned as the past season, season four managed to delve into the emotional repercussions of the events of season three.

Kudos to the whole cast because in four seasons of Lucifer, this season’s performances might just be the best. The way each and every actor plays the vulnerability of their characters in this season has never been seen before. And it puts the whole soul of the show forward.

Noticeably, season four has put less focus on the cases and more into the personal lives of the characters. Chloe is dealing with Lucifer’s revelation. And Lucifer is reeling with Chloe’s reaction to him. Meanwhile, Dan is currently still waddling in grief over Charlotte’s death (all of us still are). And Ella is similarly dealing with grief over the crumbling of her beliefs. On the other hand, Linda and Amenadiel are freaking out over Linda’s pregnancy. With all that, it’s safe to say that it’s a pretty emotional season sprinkled with a lot of wit and humor along the way. Luckily, everyone had space to develop their stories. No one was left in the dust.

In addition to that, the new characters of the season perfectly fit into the mold of the show. Inbar Lavi’s Eve was the perfect combination of cool, lovable, and desperate. And though Vinessa Vidotto was a little bit stiff on her portrayal of the angel Ramiel, she embodied the perfect mini old Amenadiel. And of course, there’s adorable little baby Charlie who we hope to see more in the next season.

Lucifer Season 4: Best Moments

Season 4 has countless memorable moments. But, one of the most lovable ones are the song and dance numbers spread throughout the episodes. Tom Ellis’s rendition of “Creep” is particularly mesmerizing. But, Leslie Ann Brandt’s rendition of “Wonderwall” has to take the crown. Maybe we could get a Lucifer-Maze duet in the future? You know, for old time’s sake. But who could actually forget the dance sequence on the finale? That’s the real bomb of the season. It did a stellar job of putting in that eccentric fun into the season that there should be more of it.

Another set of notable moments in Lucifer Season four are the fight scenes which are definite improvements from the past seasons. Though there’s a little less Maze in those scenes, she definitely makes up for it by letting us in on a little bit of her backstory and her feelings. Plus, all the auntie Maze moments are actually fun. Amenadiel’s little quirks regarding his baby are also amusing as hell. His proposal to Linda was one of the best parts of this tirade.

Other fun scenes include Lucifer’s orgy pants, Linda punching Maze, Ella and Lucifer’s nude trip to nude camp, and Lucifer’s bad boyfriend day. But, there are also notable moments that aren’t necessarily all daisies and sunshine. Take the revelation of Lucifer’s total devil form. That was quite the sight and the emotional accompaniment to heartbreaking conversations. Especially when he made all those demons kneel, that was a stunner. Then, there were all those moments that Lucifer had to come to terms with himself, those were emotional bombs too.

Lucifer Season 4 Overall Verdict

Unlike other seasons, Lucifer season four focuses on the emotional aspect of the show. And in all it’s compressed glory, season four delivers one of the most wicked, touching, unforgettable seasons to date. It took the high of season three and used it to fuel the emotional rampage of season four. From character development to incorporating social issues to the show, Lucifer definitely nailed it. The ending was quite safe, ensuring that if it doesn’t get another season, it does provide some closure. But, at the same time, it opens the doors for more opportunities for future seasons. Lucifer still has a wide universe to explore and hundreds of possibilities to exploit. Hopefully, Netflix comes out soon with a verdict. But, one sure thing is we’ll be waiting for the devil’s return.
