“Lucifer” fans all over the world are wrecked. Imagine the pain of watching the finale episode knowing that if no other network picks it up, it will be the ultimate last. And I’m telling you now that it isn’t a fitting goodbye. Oh, and speaking of goodbye’s, Charlotte’s (Tricia Helfer) untimely demise is still a raw wound. It’s pitiful to see Dan (Kevin Alejandro) so crushed. But, considering that everyone’s lives have just been upturned by Pierce’s (Tom Welling) mistake, it’s hard to guarantee the misery only to Dan. Chloe, Dan, and Lucifer know that Pierce killed Charlotte. In their chase for justice, they’re going to get more of the truth than they’ve ever asked for. No more metaphors. No more lies.
Cain Is Back In Business
“A Devil of My Word” kicks off from the last scene of the last episode. As Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and Chloe (Lauren German) watch Charlotte’s body being wheeled away, Lucifer muses that he’ll never see her again. On the other hand, he assures Chloe that she’ll see her eventually in the big pearly city up above.
Meanwhile, Dan has taken to throwing himself to work. Pierce joins him and gets really hands-on in the investigation. When he and Lucifer get some alone time, Lucifer reveals that Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) is back in heaven and he’s taken Charlotte with him. Lucifer also shares his brother’s crazy theory about them being responsible for their own fates. Pierce is skeptical about it but, he’s glad Amenadiel’s gone.
After the investigation, Pierce meets up with one of his goons from his Sinner Man club. He orders a favor called in, and his man has just the perfect guy. On the other hand, Dan comes home to an empty apartment cluttered with Charlotte’s memory. He picks up the waffle maker, and in a fury, he hurled it at the table filled with Charlotte’s papers. From the ruins, he discovers a folder filled with Charlotte’s investigation about Pierce.
Dan takes the papers back to Chloe and Lucifer in the precinct. The folder only contains evidence linking Pierce to the Sinner Man, so Chloe remains skeptical about Dan’s accusation. However, when the lieutenant calls on everyone to hear his emotional speech, Chloe immediately senses that he’s lying. She believes Dan, and they start to plan out a strategy to bring down Pierce.
Bad Cop, Good Cop
Chloe, Dan, and Lucifer’s first move are to look for Pierce’s fall guy. At the same moment, Ella (Aimee Garcia) reports finding a piece of gum at the crime scene. And guess what? Ella almost “missed” the little bugger if Pierce hadn’t extended the search to a third sweep. And guess what again. The gum was slathered with DNA from one of the criminals Charlotte was prosecuting, Steve Chamberlain. Chloe comes close to pulling Ella into the fold but, Pierce stalks out from the shadows. Once again, he acts sympathetic and extends that sympathy to Daniel.
The trio goes to visit Chamberlain who immediately denies everything. To prove their point, Chloe checks his drawer and discovers a gun matching the bullet found at the crime scene. And unfortunately, Chamberlain was hosting a party that day, so anyone could’ve placed the gun there. However, the trio easily finds out that none of Chamberlain’s guests are clean at all. None of them would have benefitted from helping frame up their host.
Meanwhile, Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) escapes Pierce’s lair, fighting off Pierce’s men while she’s still 80% drugged. (Seriously Pierce? This is Maze we’re talking about.) Bloody and bruised, Maze heads straight to Linda’s (Rachael Harris) office and scares off a patient. Once she’s sure that Linda’s safe, she drops unconscious to the floor.
Back to Lucifer and the gang, they confront the only clean person on the property, Chamberlain’s driver. Through Lucifer’s mind trick, they find out that the driver has accidentally run over a biker. So, the driver calls in a favor to the Sinner Man and now it’s his time to pay it back. However, a burner phone and just the here say of a criminal driver doesn’t help Lucifer and the team proves anything about Pierce.
Out In The Open Pierce
Dan asks help from Ella. After sharing a hug that Dan didn’t realize he needed, he tells Ella the truth. (Everybody needs an Ella.) Later on, however, Ella heads over to Pierce’s office. She surrenders the burner phone that Dan asked her to examine in secret. Then she asks Pierce to keep Dan safe. Pierce just does the opposite and calls up his man, John Barrow (Gonzalo Menendez) and informs him that Dan’s on to him. Barrow visits Dan to clean up his mistake but, he soon discovers that it’s all a trap.
Meanwhile, Lucifer corners Pierce for a little chat. Pierce admits that he killed Charlotte but, only by accident. This leads the devil to discuss Amenadiel’s theory in detail. Lucifer realized that when he fell to hell, he thought of himself as a monster first before he got his devil face. Then, when he saved his mother and told Chloe the truth, he felt better about himself and got his wings back. Similarly, when Pierce fell in love with Chloe, Lucifer thinks that Pierce finally thought that he deserved the mortality he so longingly sought after. However, Pierce denies all this. He escapes Lucifer’s interrogation by calling for help under the pretense of being under attack from Lucifer.
The team regroups in Lux. Chloe tries to use Pierce’s emotions for her to aid their agenda but, Pierce realizes what she’s doing and hangs up on her. On the other hand, Maze wakes up on Linda’s couch. After some emotional words from Linda, they both apologize to each other and finally patch up their broken friendship.
Lucifer and Chloe Crack Open A Trap
Since Pierce already knows about their plans, Chloe and Dan try to crack Barrow as a last resort. Barrow claims to have a sister he’s worried about. And Dan uses that fact to his advantage. However, in exchange for the information, Barrow wants his sister safe and sound. Chloe and Lucifer volunteer to get her.
On the way, Chloe pulls Lucifer aside for a moment. She asks him to tell her his truth, without the metaphors and without the devil talk. Lucifer assures her that he will after everything’s over. Meanwhile, Ella finds out that Barrow doesn’t have a sister. Dan realizes that Chloe and Lucifer are walking into a trap. He tries to get a hold of them but, it’s too late.
Chloe and Lucifer enter the fake address and come face to face with Pierce’s armada. Pierce and Lucifer both tell Chloe to stand down and save herself, however, she refuses to budge. Instead, she quickly pulls out her gun and shoots Pierce. They exchange shots, and each hit their target. As Pierce lay on the ground bleeding, he shouts at his men to finish the job. Lucifer hugs Chloe close and uses his wings to protect her from the rain of bullets. The bullets mercilessly fall and wound Lucifer’s wings but, at the end of it, he and Chloe disappear.
Lucifer’s Last Battle
Lucifer takes Chloe to the building’s rooftop where she’ll be safe. Chloe regains consciousness and reveals the body armor she’s wearing. Though she’s uninjured, Lucifer decides to end the fight. He pops back downstairs and uses all his might to take down each one of Pierce’s men. It boils down to the battle between the devil and the first murderer on Earth.
Pierce whips out Maze’s demon blade. But, even though he had that advantage, Lucifer managed to plunge the knife deep into Pierce’s chest. As Pierce lay dying on the floor, he seems to be so sure that the gates of heaven will open up for him. However, Lucifer reminds him that he killed Charlotte. Though Pierce insists that he doesn’t feel guilty about it, Lucifer knows that Pierce feels like a monster deep down. And Lucifer vows that this will bring Cain back to hell and torture him there for another eternity. Pierce laughs. With his last breath, he reminds Lucifer that he can’t run from his own demons as well.
Chloe comes down and finds Lucifer crouching beside Pierce’s body. As he stands and turns around, his devil face returns in its full glory. Chloe horrifically realizes that everything he’s said is true. Lucifer is the devil.
Lucifer Season 3: Overall Verdict
Finally, after three seasons of suppression and impeded revelations, the big reveal has finally found its way to Lucifer. It took quite some time, a lot of amusing distractions, a couple of horrible engagements and a lot of tears but, it was well worth the wait.
By far, this third season is the best of them all three seasons that Lucifer has put out. The characters have successfully filled out their building character developments from the previous season. And in turn, it leads “Lucifer’s” storyline to new heights. It’s noticeable that in this third season, the writers of “Lucifer” has spun the tale to concentrate it a bit more on the sensitive side of the show. But that doesn’t mean that they’ve ripped out the devilish humor that it had. And this is why it’s such a great pain to know that “Lucifer” is still in the rocks of being picked up for another season.
The last season of “Lucifer” much especially that last episode has pulled the door wide open for so much more. From what seemed like a narrowing tube to the end, the show has pulled itself out to a wider plain. It seems like that was the third season’s sole purpose. If it does get picked up, then we’re all in for a painful but exciting wait for a season that’ll surely one-up this one. However, if it doesn’t, then all I could say is that it was a damn great devilish ride. Cheers to hoping that the devil lives on.
