Maybe it’s time to make a ‘most emotional episodes’ list for ‘Lucifer’ entitled ‘Sympathy for the Devil.’ It’s almost difficult to keep track of all these episodes when they just don’t stop coming. Though there’s always a splash of wicked comedy here and there, “Lucifer” always manages to drive people deep into the ocean of feelings.
For example, this episode’s title, “Anything Pierce Can Do I Can Do Better,” says it all. However, funny as it may seem to watch Lucifer and Pierce trying to one-up each other for Chloe, it all boils down to the fact that Chloe chooses one of them. In the last episode, Lucifer was betrayed by his supposed closest confidante. This time, it’s something worse. And it might just be the beginning of an even more painful episode. It seems that ‘Lucifer’ has grand plans to leave us inevitably broken by the end of Season 3.
Pierce Decides To Win Back Chloe
A new case lines up for Chloe when someone strangles a ballerina to death. However, as that is happening, Pierce explains his theory to Lucifer that it’s Chloe’s love that makes them both vulnerable. Lucifer refuses to believe it and insists that it’s his dad’s doing all over again. Lucifer was happy enough to leave Pierce to do what he’s always wanted to do: die.
Chloe comes into the office the next morning trying to hide any evidence of grief by a pair of sunglasses. However, Ella catches on quickly and squeezes the truth out of Chloe. Ella, being a good friend and a major supporter of “Piercecker,” barges into Pierce’s office and confronts him about it. Pierce realized that his curse is gone as Ella goes on into a tirade of how stupid his reasons sound. He can grow old and live a normal life with Chloe.
Pierce finds Chloe outside the crime scene. He explains his side to Chloe. Then, Pierce takes Chloe by surprise when he tells her ‘I love you.’ (There’s just something so wrong with hearing Pierce say this.) However, Chloe’s not won over by a simple confession. She leaves Pierce after she says she can’t trust his words anymore.
Lucifer Starts the Show-Up Game
As they go on with the investigation, Lucifer keeps jabbing at Pierce Chloe’s broken relationship. Chloe snaps and tells him to back off. The devil consults with his therapist, Dr. Linda. And out of that conversation, Lucifer concludes that he needs to tip Chloe’s affections to him to make things go back to normal.
In the precinct, Maze demands to know why Pierce is calling the plan off. Pierce gives her his reasons. At the same time, he also doesn’t budge from his decision even with anything that Maze says. Maze leaves the office looking like she’s making plans of her own.
Lucifer tries to brighten up Chloe’s day with lemon bars. He soon finds out though that Pierce had already given her a plate of it. Dan takes a bite out of one of them and upon knowing they’re from Pierce, he spits it back out. Chloe redirects the team’s focus back on the case.
Ella found the owner of the locker where the ballet shoes that was used to strangle the victim came from. Chloe and Lucifer find that the owner of the ballet shoes was the victim’s apprentice, Amber. She gives enough reason to throw the suspicion off of her. And, she also points Chloe and Lucifer to the show America’s Next Prima Ballerina.
As they approach Chloe’s car, they realize it’s covered with tons of roses. Pierce left a note saying ‘No more empty words.’ Lucifer heads straight to Lux to seek Amenadiel’s help to dig dirt on Pierce. Thinking that this might be another one of his tests, Amenadiel agrees.
Maze Goes on With the Plan
The team finds Miles Drucker, an ex-choreographer with a bum leg. He’s also the creator of America’s Next Prima Ballerina. He lost quite a fortune when the victim backed out to be his shows host. They bring him in for questioning, and they find out that he was actually pressured to make a deal with the victim. See, Miles is only pretending to have a bum leg to keep his career going. Someone caught a video of him exposing this and used it blackmail him.
On the other side of town, Amenadiel finds Charlotte in a three-star hotel drinking her way to damnation. Amenadiel asks for her help to help Lucifer. Charlotte agrees considering that she thinks it might put her in God’s good graces.
Meanwhile, Lucifer still keeps trying to win Chloe over. This time, he presented her with a brand new car. Though Chloe was impressed at first, she returns the car keys to Lucifer. She also tells him that it’s not about stuff.
The next morning, Chloe finds Maze lounging on the couch. Though there’s still a little bit of tension between them, Chloe gives in and tells Maze about Pierce. Maze keeps up her act as a kind, caring friend. She says to Chloe that she visited Pierce and saw him grieving. Trixie interrupts them but, when she sees Maze, she goes back into her room.
Charlotte Works in the Name of God
Dan calls Chloe and tells her that the blackmail email sent to Miles came from the apartment of William Sterling, the chairman of LA West Ballet. Chloe heads over to the studio and is surprised to see Lucifer already there.
Trying to prove that actions not words matter to him, Lucifer energetically explains what he found out. He thinks Sterling is the victim’s stalker. He points to pictures of Sterling with the victim and the victim’s belongings scattered around the place. But, as they both try to conclude, Sterling comes into the apartment. Lucifer nabs him but, Chloe explains that Sterling and the victim were only having an affair. Apparently, it also wasn’t him who sent the email.
Meanwhile, Charlotte and Amenadiel turn to literal stalkers as they follow Pierce around. They take pictures of him exchanging cash with a shady looking guy. The guy gives Pierce an envelope in return. Just when Amenadiel thinks that their job is done, Charlotte tells him that they need to know what was inside the mystery envelope.
As Pierce rides away on his motorcycle, Charlotte nabs a motorcycle for herself from a stranger. She follows him but, Pierce catches her and corners her. Charlotte lies and tries to seduce him. However, Pierce turns away from her advances. Once again, he repeats that he loves Chloe.
Chloe Gets Stuck in a Dinner Contest
Back in the precinct, the team examines the blackmail video. Pierce calls and Chloe hesitates to pick up the phone but, she does it anyway. In a rush, Pierce pleads with her for one last dinner together. Chloe agrees. Lucifer rushes in and asks Chloe to hear him out in private.
Chloe goes to Lux later on upon Lucifer’s request and finds that he’s set up the whole place in a romantic setting. However, once again, Chloe is disappointed. Lucifer asks, “Isn’t this better than anything Pierce can do?” Chloe tears up upon realizing that Lucifer only did it to show-up Pierce. She demands to know why Lucifer is doing that to her. And he replied that it’s because Pierce doesn’t deserve her. Someone better does.
Chloe stands to leave but, she is interrupted by a call. Dan and Ella found someone’s reflection in the windows in the blackmail video. It was the victim’s ex-dance partner, Miguel. As they arrive to see Amber and Miguel dancing on stage, Lucifer realizes that Miguel was in love with Amber.
Sterling arrives as well and points a gun at Miguel. Miguel was only trying to get the victim out of the way. But, when the victim found out that Miguel was blackmailing Miles, she threatened to get him fired. If he gets fired, Miguel couldn’t even work in the same company as Amber so, Miguel killed the victim.
Chloe asks why Miguel just didn’t tell Amber how he feels. The dancer replies that he was afraid that she wouldn’t love him back. Amber comes around and admits that she does have feelings for him. However, it was too late. Miguel blew it. As he watches Chloe walk away, Lucifer realizes that so did he.
Chloe Says Yes
Chloe doesn’t arrive, so Pierce leaves dinner untouched. Amenadiel and Charlotte arrive, and they snoop for the envelope. They find it. However, it was empty. Despite that, Charlotte is determined to continue the job.
Linda goes to comfort Lucifer. He explains that he knows he’s screwed up but, it changes nothing. Lucifer thinks that if he does tell Chloe what he feels, Chloe will only be compelled to return the affections because it’s God’s will. And Lucifer doesn’t want to fall into his father’s plans. However, Linda helps him realize that God can’t control Lucifer’s or Chloe’s choices or actions.
This time, Linda hands Lucifer the question he so freely asks others. “What do you truly desire?” Lucifer doesn’t hesitate anymore when he answers that he wants Chloe to choose him. With hope back in him, Lucifer heads over to Chloe’s. However, he might be a little too late. Pierce has arrived before him. And as Pierce kneels on the ground and holds up a ring to Chloe, he asks her to marry him. Lucifer could only watch as Chloe says yes.
“Lucifer” continues next Monday, April 30th, with “Quintessential Deckerstar” at 8/9c on FOX.
