'Lucifer' Season 3, Episode 17 'Let Pinhead Sing!' Recap: The Devil's Spotlight [SPOILERS]

“Piercifer” has officially broken up. Lucifer (Tom Ellis) finally decided to split with Pierce (Tom Welling) in last week’s episode. It seems that keeping Chloe (Lauren German) safe is more important than smiting God. And how does the devil say this? He says that Detective Chloe Decker isn’t fit for the spotlight. Lucifer would try his utmost best to keep Chloe out of his spotlight in this week’s episode entitled “Let Pinhead Sing!” This includes singing with a diva on stage for a mini-concert in Lux. However, this seemingly brilliant plan turns out to be a painful mistake for Lucifer.

That’s My Spotlight

In his therapy session with Dr. Linda (Racheal Harris), Lucifer tells her that he’s pulling himself out of his dad’s spotlight. He’s dropping the hunt for taking off the mark of Cain from Pierce. Lucifer is also mellowing out from God’s radar for once. However, Linda points out that he might be pushing boundaries on the wrong corner. She, herself, reflects on her words about taking responsibility in a conflict. Is Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) ringing any hell bells?
In their new case Julie, a backup dancer, is shot dead by a firework live in a performance. The poor girl was only substituting for the real diva of the show, Axara (Skye Townsend). Lucifer realizes that the spotlight is synonymous with a red, angry target mark and decides to take Chloe out of his.

On the first leg of their investigation, Lucifer makes a new friend from Axara’s bodyguard Bob. Afterward, they get their first suspect of the day from herself. The Turmeric shake sipping diva pointed her finger at her ex-back-up singer Patrick. Her best friend and the best Turmeric shake maker in town CC agreed to that. But, Patrick only confesses to being Axara 2.0, not Axara’s attempted murderer.
Chloe and Lucifer turn their attention then on Axara’s social media followers. Lucifer also shifts his affection on Ella (Aimee Garcia). He pulls out a baseball shirt printed with “World’s Greatest Forensic Scientist.” He also adds a sugary sweet comment about how every day’s a celebration when Ella’s around. Everything earns Chloe’s look of disbelief and skepticism.
Dragging the pair back to the case, Chloe mentions that sometimes, fans could snap. They find a certain Benny Parker who won a raffle draw for a VIP ticket for Axara’s concert. The guy’s tweets exposed him as downright obsessed with Axara.  On the way to Benny’s house, Chloe confronts Lucifer about his “reverse Oprah” behavior. Lucifer chuckles it away and explains that everybody just deserves a little Lucifer. Unfortunately, they find Benny dead. Ella later reports that Benny actually died before the firework was even set up for Julie. They both realize that the killer was still on the lose. Meanwhile, Lucifer has been distributing Axara merch and celebrating “Employee of the Month” ceremonies. He’s got a lot of spotlights to give.

Dust in the Wind

Pierce, on the other hand, is pouring his heart out on his raspy rendition of “Dust in the Wind.” To his chagrin, Ella comes in to cheer him up with a compliment box. However, the only thing anyone in the office could seem to say about Pierce is “He has really good arms.” He does but, after reading 3 of these compliments, Ella jumps out of his office. She bumps into Dan to whom she passes Pierce cheer up squad crown to.
Pierce’s new buddy Dan takes him to Lux. He buys him a couple of drinks and convinces him to talk about his problem. What Dan didn’t expect is an onslaught of deep dark existential crisis from his boss. Baffled, Dan concedes by quoting Pierce’s new theme song. Maybe we all are just dust in the wind.

A couple of drinks later, Dan is giving Pierce beer advice. Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) arrives just in time to save Dan. He barks at Pierce to stop all the scheming and plotting of getting his mark off. To his surprise, Pierce agreeably nods and says okay. As the angel he is, Amenadiel gets into discussing his faith and optimism. But, he didn’t manage to convert Pierce just yet.

Hoes Before Bros

Meanwhile, Linda goes to Maze’s house to apologize. In her hands, she held a yellow wrapped ax as a peace offering. Maze listens to Linda’s plea but never opens the door, even when Linda admits to choosing their friendship over Amenadiel. Distraught, Linda leaves the ax on the doorstep.
Charlotte Richards (Tricia Helfer) notices that the doctor was upset in her therapy session with her. She tries to expand her newfound interest on hitching down her self-centeredness by offering to be the listener this time around. Upon hearing that Linda’s problem was about a conflict, Charlotte excitedly offers her mediating expertise.
In Charlotte’s office, Linda and Maze try to sort out their boy problem. Linda pours out her most heartfelt apology which Maze rejects. It quickly escalates into a horrible verbal battle which Charlotte can only cringe at. Heartbreakingly, Maze crushes all the wings of hope in Linda’s heart and bites out the words “Go to hell.”

There’s a new diva in Los Angeles: Lucifer Morningstar

Going back to the case at hand, Chloe bans Axara from performing at her next show. Axara refuses but someone shoots some bullets in her direction. Chloe covers her up with her body just in time. Lucifer comes close to breaking his facade with Chloe willingly putting her life on the line. To make up for it, he offers to be Axara’s bodyguard and takes her to his Lux penthouse. Axara stubbornly tries to practice for her show by forcing Bob and another guard to be her backup dancers. Lucifer arrives just in time and saves Bob from this tirade. Lucifer puts his tactics back in action and stubbornly tries to make Axara her precious Turmeric shake. Axara freaks out when she sees him doing the wrong thing. It ends with Lucifer’s expensive suit and Axara’s expensive practice gear drenched in orange Turmeric shake.
After showering and changing, Axara tries to seduce Lucifer. But, Lucifer wiggles his way out of her onslaught without even landing a finger on her. He emphasizes that he’s not in the mood. And it seems like this is happening a lot more often for the king of hell. Axara then manages to squeeze out the reason Lucifer offered to be her bodyguard. Lucifer confesses that he’s afraid that his defiance would lead his big old dad to come after the things he cares about most. So, he’s trying to focus on something else. Axara says she felt the same way after the incident at her show. She feels like people are trying to stop her from doing the thing she loves most – music. She then asks Lucifer for a drink but when he comes back, the door was wide open without a hair of Axara in sight.
Back in the precinct, Chloe puts Axara’s manager in cuffs after a heated discussion about the star. But, Ella prevents her from making the wrong call when she gave him the autopsy results for Benny. It turns out, Benny was tortured by being forcibly stuffed with a boatload of Kale and Turmeric before he died. Talk about the worst way to die.
Lucifer finds Axara holding her own mini-concert in Lux’s dance floor. He comes down and is forced to subtly tell her to go upstairs by joining in on Axara’s rendition of “I Will Survive.” Now, everybody knows the devil can sing anyone to heaven. But, this duet is just one of his best. Unexpectedly, CC bursts out of the crowd and points a knife to Lucifer and Axara. She reveals that she wants Axara to step out of the spotlight which she thinks always puts the diva in danger. Chloe arrives and unloads the evidence that paints CC as the murderer of Julie and Benny. CC starts to attack Chloe but Lucifer jumps her. He successfully pins her down to the floor but gets stabbed in the process. After CC is taken away, Chloe fusses over Lucifer’s wound.

In the corner, Pierce watches Chloe and Lucifer. Amenadiel plants himself beside him and talks on about faith. Pierce finishes his statement that if Lucifer, the devil, can have something like Chloe that can make him vulnerable, maybe the first murderer of mankind can too.
Later in the office, a smiling Pierce comes by Chloe’s desk. He congratulates her and she shows him the two VIP tickets that Axara gave her for a thank you. To Chloe’s bafflement, Pierce jumps at the opportunity and offers himself as her companion to the concert. Lucifer, all bandaged up, comes in and tells Chloe that he is done with poking the spotlight away. It’s no use after all. Upon noticing the tickets, he immediately asks what time he’s picking her up. But, Chloe hesitantly says that since he’s been quite distant lately, it’s going to be Pierce and her who’s going to the concert. Lucifer can only watch from a distance when Pierce came by Chloe’s desk later that night. He then goes to Linda’s office. With pain in his voice, he tells Linda that he might’ve made a horrible mistake.
“Lucifer” continues next Monday, March 19th, with “The Last Heartbreak” at 8/7c on FOX.
